Can I restore TrueImage backup to unformatted partition?

Hi guys,

I hope this is an easy question, but I need to be REALLY SURE.

1.
Can I restore a backup to a partitition that is not formatted at all?
I used Drive cleaner to erase the partition, and I want to restore an image of the whole partition.

2.
If the answer is NO ( I must format it to NTFS) is there any differences between the format of XP's version of NTFS, or Disk Director's format, or Windows 7 format?
