corrupted partition, partition magic 8
hi,
i managed to kill my windows partition with partition magic 8 despite the warnings windows 7 gave me.
pm8 said something about partition size not right and "corrected" it, this happend right after pm8 started - i accepted two dialogs.
so with any luck only the partition data is wrong.
now the system boots until the windows logo flies onto the screen and then reboots.
acronis was able to show me my files ( i dont have a windows here right now, did that at a friends so please excuse me if i dont remember the right option names)
i did a right click on the drive and then search or show files something.
the question is, how do i tell acronis to write a new partition table or is there a way to copy the files to a new medium and then format the disc?
note: acronis shows my disc having three partitions, the whole disc is 250gb, the first partition is the windows 7 recovery (system partition), the second is c: with 232 gb and the third shouldnt exist because its shown as 232gb with no content.
im pretty sure that theres only the hidden windows partition and c: on the drive.

you mean dd from linux? if so, arent you afraid to scare away the windows guys?
the first/second partition sizes looked alright in the gui output from acronis concerning size....does it display CHS/LBA data for the partitions somewhere? (again, i have to remove the drive and leave the house or i would look myself)

I meant Disk Director (the Acronis partitioning program). The problem could just be because the two partitions are using the same drive space, which shouldn't happen.

im back at a windows machine, heres a screenshot:

"Laufwerk2 (drive 2)" the empty non formatted space after the first partition shouldnt be there...
im currently moving files to get free space to make a backup from the partition from drive 2, will report back

looks like acronis saved my ass, copying the partition to another drive worked.
im in the process of reacreating the original drive - not the fastest solution but one that works.
i came accross 2 problems, for a resize operation acronis rebootet - i left the room for a few hours after coming back there was only a blinkingc cursor in the upper left of the screen. after a reboot the reszising was done as expected
the other one was that windows 7 default laptop settings tell the system to shut down even if connected to the power outlet.
acronis did copy a partition from one usb drive to another - which of course didnt survie the power saving.
- maybe acronis could warn the user before starting this operation to change his energy settings.
as a little side note concerning disk notify, its not a good idea to have your backup drive disconnected if you have important data.
humans are lazy....you a need a automated solution that works without human input.
and you want the data to be on another machine also.
