[Resolved] ATI Home 2012 Unable to Clone disk

Thread needs solution

I have ATI Home 2012 (build 6131) running on a W7-64 computer. I upgraded in December and have done 3 clones of my C drive since then but now it doesn't work.

Running services.msc shows all processes are started and are on Automatic. The clone process starts, I select the source and target and it gets to a window that says "Recovering... Time remaining: calculating".

Shortly after that another window pops up above the taskbar with the dreaded big red "X" that says "Acronis True Image Home Operation has failed". No error codes, no indication of what or why it failed.
I've tried all combinations of turning the 3 Acronis processes on and off but nothing has helped. I also did a repair install of ATI Home and that too has made no difference.

A while back I had activated the Secure Zone to see what it would do. As far as I can tell it just took up space which is to say I saw no need for it.Then I decided to try the Try&Decide option. That didn't work. I wasn't too concerned because I have ATI v10 on my old XP computer and T&D was working there. When I couldn't get the clone to work I thought it might have something to do with the Secure Zone so I removed that.

It didn't fix the clone issue but now the Try&Decide works!! Big deal, I still can't clone my C drive. I mention this because it may or may not have anything to do with my current problem.

The only major thing I have done recently is update video drivers for my ATI HD4870 card and that should not have any effect as far as I can tell.

I'm very disappointed in this version and build. I have not been able to get everything to work all at the same time. I could get by without the secure zone and T&D but I won't get by without the clone feature.

Welcome to our Forum, it's nice to have you with us.

From your description it looks like the hard drive contains bad blocks or errors in the file system. It can be fixed by running a native Windows repair: 

  1. Go to Start -> Run -> cmd
    This will get you to the Windows command prompt
  2. Issue there the following command:
    chkdsk /f /r
    Press Enter
  3. Command line will offer you to run the check upon next system start up. Type "Y", and hit enter
  4. Reboot the machine

Upon booting it will fix the errors if any.

If the problem remains, please send us Acronis Report from the machine with both drives attached.

You were spot on in your suggestion. I ran chkdsk and it found and fixed a number of errors. I was able to run the clone disk and Try&Decide works now too. I'm going to destroy that drive as soon as I do a clone of my clone :-)

A full disk backup, including all partitions, is often a better solution than Clone. You could make several such backups to an external drive, whereas Clone is, by definition, a single one-time duplication.
