2011: Can't select target drive for recovery, all drives greyed out

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I created a sector based image of a 100 GB Windows system partition using ATI 2011 Update 3 Build 6942 and the Windows (not the bootable CD) version of Acronis True Image. Then I booted from the Bootable CD and selected the file containing the backup of the 100 GB Partition. However I can't choose any of the drives available on the system as target, though all of them are larger than the 100 GB required to restore the image! Unfortunately there's also no hint from the Acronis software, why I can't select any of the drives, really poor usability ):

Note I am using a Windows install on VMware Workstation 8 for testing purposes, however that shouldn't be the problem. I connected one HDD once by SCSI and once by IDE, however that also didn't change anything.

Thanks for any hint!

When booted from the TI Recovery CD, use the "Add new disk" option on the larger target drive and delete the existing partitions on the target disk. You want the space on the target disk to be unallocated.

If that does not succeed, clear the partitions again and then try check marking only Drive C to be restored and then restore the track0/mbr in a second separate pass.

Under normal circumstances, I would also suggest you checkmark the "Recover Disk Signature" but since you are virtual, I do not know whether it would help or hurt.

Max,

Is it possible that these virtual disks are identified as dynamic disks by Windows?

Thank you both, on a real system it worked when I only selected either the image or the MBR. however on a real system if the source disk is still in the system, I can at least restore to the original source, even if I select MBR + image at once - that wasn't possible in the VM. Anyway, the usability sucks.
