Restoring Data from Old XP Computer to New Windows 7 Computer with HTI 11

Thread needs solution

I read some discussions of this but hope I can get simple answer.

My current computer has 2 disk partitions -- 'C' with system and programs and 'D' with data files. I backup and validate both regularly to and external USB 2TB hard drive. So far so good.

Assuming some sort of hardware failure with current computer I will want to restore all data including Outlook files from current computer to a new Windows 7 Computer. I understand that I will need to reinstall current programs via Windows 7.

What is the simplest most bomb proof way to restore the contents of partition 'D' to the new machine?

Can I install Acronis on the new computer and access backups on the USB drive and transfer files to new computer?

For peace of mind I would really like to know the easy way to do this since this is the most likely scenario for me and many Acronis users?

If you have the space, have you considered creating a D partition on the new computer and using the Acronis CD to restore the files from old data D to new Data D?

Thank you Grover. This seems like the very best way to do this. The old computer hasn't died yet but I want to configure my backups to meet the needs of the most likely scenario (buying a new computer with Windows 7).

Grover - wait. I actually do have an additional question.
Let me see if I have this right.
1) Create 'D' Partition on new computer
2) Install Acronis on new computer
3) Connect USB hard drive with backups
Question is will Acronis installed on new computer recognize the backups on the USB harddrive like the old computer does?
4) Restore 'D' drive/partition.

TI will recognize the older backup image (just browse them them if it doesn't find them automatically). Keep in mind that you shouldn't install TI 11 on Windows 7 (it's not compatible). Use TI 2010 or later.

If you don't want to (or need to) restore the entire "D" partition you can Mount or Explore it and copy out the files you need. Sometimes this works better when migrating because you can place your data in steps.

I a going from a Desktop with XP to a Notebook with Windows 7 Home...
Now using Acronis True Imaage Home 2011..

What is best and simple way to move my Acronis to new Notebook with windows 7 ??

My email.. Hanklil@aol.com

If you just need to move the Acronis software, it is as simple as uninstalling from the desktop, and installing on the Notebook.

If you need to restore a backup of the desktop to the notebook, you have 2 options:
- restoring a disk and partition backup will erase the target disk, so you will find yourself with XP on the Notebook. To achieve this you need Universal Restore. I think this is NOT what you want to do..
- restoring user content (not applications: these do need to be reinstalled): you can restore only selected folders and files on the notebook. You just need to install ATI on the notebook, double click on the archive TIB files and copy/paste the content back.
