CAN'T BACKUP TO NAS DRIVE

Thread needs solution

Just upgraded to Acronis True Image Home 2012.

When trying to backup to my WD MyBookLive NAS drive on a PC running Microsoft Vista I "Browse for destination", see my NAS drive, point to folder I want to back up to, click "OK" and then "Back up now". Screen indicates that it's backing up to chosen destination and is calculating "Time left", but there is no indication of activity on MyBookLive drive. After a couple of minutes I get a Confirmation that "Access to the file is denied".

I have a 2nd licensed copy of the application on a Windows 7 PC and have successfully backed up to the same NAS drive from this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

After further investigation I can refine the problem a bit. It is possible to backup to a public share (folder) on the NAS drive, but not to a Private share (i.e. one requiring authentication).

There were some issues with NAS introduced with 2012. There are many threads on this... Is your NAS and computer on same subnet?

When setting up your backup event ensure that you are putting in your user name and password for your WD otherwise you will not be able to write to it.

Thanks for your reponses.

@hhansard
Yes.

@David
I'm not given the opportunity to enter the share's username and password. Having browsed to and selected the Private NAS share and hit "OK" and "Backup now", the progress bar indicates that backup is in operation (while the NAS drive LED indicates it isn't) until the "can't access file" message appears a couple of minutes later. It does appear to be an (absence of) authentication issue, 'cos like I said, I can successfully backup to a Public NAS share.

Daveande,
When you select the NAS as destination, you will see a "edit credentials" link on top of the right navigation panel (you see the NAS on the left panel, double click on it, the link is on top of the right panel). Then enter your username and password.

Hey Pat L!

Thanks, you certainly raised my hopes there!  I'd not spotted that link previously.  I clicked on it, ensured my username and password were entered correctly, clicked on the "Test connection" link followed by "Connect" and "Back up now" when "Connection established" had been confirmed.  Things looked more promising 'cos this time the read/write LED on the NAS device flickered a little. However, it was all to no avail, the dreaded "Access to the file is denied" message appearing after a few minutes!

Following hhansard's hint that there were other posts on this subject I found this and this.  The last post on these was is dated Feb 2012.  I assume that despite the indications that Acronis are aware of the problems  and are "working on a fix", none has yet materialised.  Can anyone confirm this is the case?

If so it's pretty disgraceful that Acronis could have released so flawed a product into the marketplace and hugely embarassing that they've still not managed to make it fit for purpose so much later!

You are positive that the user has full access privileges to the share, right?

As a temp debug move, can you create a new share on the nas without any access requirements and see if you can get to that one? just copy the backup script and change the destination share. if that doesn't work, create a new script and point to the new share. that may help if it's the script, nas or maybe something else...

Well, my wife always says I’m a persistent bugger. After I don’t know how many hours of trying I finally got ATIH 2012 to successfully backup to a Private NAS share!

So, to reiterate, the scenario was that on a Vista PC I was unable to backup to a Public share on my WD MyBookLive NAS drive. The path to the backup destination was being specified in the format Network/MyBookLive/Acronis. This resulted in a “Access to the file is denied” message.

On the Vista PC I was, however, able to backup to a Public share without problem (although, interestingly, the process for so doing included being asked to provide authentication details which, of course, should not have any relevance for a Public share). On a Windows 7 PC I could backup successfully to both a Public and Private share without problem.

I finally got to successfully backup to a Private share on the Vista PC by mapping my drive :Z to the desired NAS destination using the NAS drive’s IP address and subsequently browsing to this, in the format \\192.168.1.n\Acronis . This time clicking on “Back up now” resulted in being asked to “Enter your Windows credentials” following which the backup operation was completed successfully!

A possible explanation for the different behaviour of Vista and Windows 7 PCs in that the former has a multiple card reader which accounts for drive letter :H :I :J :K and :L. The Windows 7 PC is a laptop which has drives :C and :D only.

Hope this may help others experiencing similar difficulties and thanks to all those who have helped me!
