move vista from C to D on the same harddisk

I have Vista (Pro) installed and 2 partitions - 2nd (d:) partition is emty. Now I want to move Vista from C to D and then install Windows 7 on the clean c: to have both systems at least for a while

The reason is that i can delete Vista from D when i am totally happy with Windows 7 and have migrated everything.

I managed to backup C and write the backup back to D (now i have a copy of C on D now).

Although Vista is now on another partition and working it is still as C in the bootmanager causing trouble with the windows 7 install.

How do i totally move Vista from C to D on the same harddisk ?

You didn't need to do that move at all! I had Vista installed on "C" and then installed Windows 7 on "D", and when either OS boots, it treats its OS volume as "C", regardless of where it was installed. Thus, when I'm running Seven, it sees Vista as being in "D"; when I'm running Vista, it sees Seven as being in "D".

Also, if you have Vista already installed, when you install Seven, it will automatically update the Vista boot loader files with entries for Seven. Thus, if you later remove or reformat the Vista partition, that will delete the boot loader files and you won't be able to boot Seven.

First thing you should do after you get Seven installed, is use the built-in program to create and burn a Recovery CD. You will need that later to rewrite the Seven boot loader files if you then remove Vista.
