True Image: please listen to your customers!

Thread needs solution

I am a fanatic about making images. I have been using Acronis True Image since version 7. Currently I am using version 11 Home.
I must say, I do not like the way Acronis is heading with TI.
I feel they are chasing customers away.
Basically, TI 11 Home does what I need ... except .. the boot media does not work on my SATA drives.
I have to build me a BartPE boot CD to be able to restore an image.

As a 'bug fix' Acronis allows me to download a TI 2009 iso image with which I can burn a bootable CD.
What I see when booting from that CD is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) that is completely different to that of TI 7.... Not only is it completely different .. It also does not work. It is a complete mess. Resizing a window is allowed but it completely messes up your screen. If you resize a window, the resizing rectangle appears, but the window contents is not resized at all. If you have tried it, you know what I mean.

Recently, I installed and tried the TI 2010 trial version. When running the bootable media, guess what: another entirely different GUI again (the desktop version also for that matter)!!!! It looks different from TI 7 and TI 2009, but it is still a mess. Resizing a window still messes up the entire screen. Not to say that it plainly does not work !! I can't believe that a developer releases stuff like this. I am a programmer myself. If I would be to release a product like this and actually charge money for this, I would be ashamed!

Now, I am already looking out for an alternative for Acronis TI. As soon as I find a competing product that suits my needs, I am outta here. Nevertheless, Acronis TI has served me well in the past. Therefore I would like to give them some positive comments , so they can get their act together, before they perish.....

- Go back to the functionality of TI 7. We don't need all of that bloatware. Ditch those whistles and bells that we don't need. We need to be able to make images and restore them. That's basically it!
- Stop changing GUI's with every update! This is driving your customers crazy! No wishtles and bells, no fancy gui's, no eye candy! We just need stuff that works! If you provide us with that, we are happy customers! Nowadays, we have to get used to a new GUI everytime a new TI comes out. Stop doing that! No matter what your marketing guys say, don't listem to them! We do not need that! In fact, it drives your customers away! All we need is that good old Windows look-and-feel GUI and ... make it work!
I know, changing GUI's is a way to justify upgrade fees, make the customers believe that they got 'a brand new product'. While in fact, under the hood it is all the same. Only the visual stuff has changed.
- Stop adding bloatware. What I need is this:
* make images (from windows and from bootable media)
* restore images (from windows and from bootable media)
* bootable media being CD and/or USB flash disks
* validate images from bootable media
* make images, not only from partitions/disks but also from folders (and also to restore them)

The problem with current bootable media is that they rely on Linux distros that apparantly lag years behind on disk drivers.
People have to rely on BartPE to make it work. Is that the way it was intended to be?

That's basically it. No bloated stuff, not a dozen of services running.
I hope someone in the proper position at Acronis is reading this and takes it seriously.
The basic message is this: "Go back to your roots. Give us a lightweight product that is realiable! Take TI 7 and make it work with current hardware!!!!"

Admin, please do yourselve a favour and make sure that the proper people at Acronis get to read this.

PS. If I wouldn't care about Acronis I wouldn't be posting this....

Kind regards
Eddy

If you do find a viable alternative to TI, let me know please!

I agree. TI started out as a great product (TI 6). It had its problems as all software. But it did what I wanted (though always seemed to be behind on the data storage media options), and Acronis gave good email support. Now, I hate the worsening, if not non-existent direct customer support from Acronis.

Way back in April 2003, I was guided to TI by Stephen Lawton, Senior Marketing Manager. I was impressed by his responding to my Newsgroup search for good backup software. I fear this attitude is now lost there!

Al,

I saw your Usenet post. I invite you to give Acronis True Image a try.
Yes, you can save an image directly to same partition that is being
imaged. Yes, you can restore individual or multiple files. Yes, you can
do all of this from within Windows and not boot down to DOS. Yes, you
can create an image while you are continuing to work in other
applications. Acronis True Image supports more backup mediums than
Ghost or Drive Image -- you can save your image to the same partition, a
USB 2.0 or FireWire device, across the network -- even to a writable
DVD. You can get more info on the product at
http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/.

Cheers

I agree on the disappointing lack of free support. If Acronis was confident in the quality of their software, they wouldn't be afraid to offer free support. The fact that they are unwilling to make any commitment shows that they expect more problems than they have the available staff to respond to.

If Acronis is not confident in its products, why on Earth should I trust my important backups to them? Sorry, but I think it's time to move on.

I had a problem with some free DVD conversion software. I got an email from Tech support in two days, but actually only a short time after they opened my email. This was a Chinese company - I call that EXCELLENT customer support.

Acronis - I pay good money for your software!

ARE YOU LISTENING?

I have used Acronis since 8, I think.

I backed up my system with 2010 and now I'm stuck with some kind of corrupt archive. Windows 7 x64 on an SSD. I made two backups, verified them, and still stuck with an unrepairable bootmgr error.

I have two USB keyboards and I'm fighting to get the boot CD to recognize them consistently.

Software dealing with something as important as data restoration should be neither complicated or buggy. I think I'm giving up on TI and looking elsewhere.

The joke is when C: drive goes by by and you have to image a new drive and the bootable CD will not read your back up, how much diferance dose it make that this program has all those other bells and whistles. You are dead, done, "reinstall" becouse acronis won't help!

Hello all,

First of all, please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience and delayed response in this thread.

Eddy, I can understand that some customers may find the software more complicated and not matching the basic needs. Please be sure that I will forward this thread to ourmanagement, so they can consider your suggestions. Thank you for the cooperation!

Now, regarding the exact issue you experience: as far as I understand, you're facing incorrect window display after resizing, is that correct?

If yes, this issue can be caused by incorrect drivers for your Video card injected to the standalone version, either Video card is not able to work with correct video mode for some reason. If you wish, we can escalate this issue to our Experts Team so they can fix the bootable media for your particular card.

Regarding the reason why we selected Linux base instead of WinPE:

- Linux software is free and has open code, so we can easily compile and change its contents, without communication with third part developers

- It's easier to handle licensing with Linux

- Linux has its own community, which we can use to discuss issues and enhancements

Once again, please be sure that I will forward this thread to appropriate person.

Regarding free support: you will be able to submit a support case during first 30 days after purchase the product (for initial setup and backup issues) and during 60 days for the recovery issues. If you wish to receive a support, please log in to your account, choose Contact Support and then clink on Start Here button. You will be able to proceed through Wizard to sort the issue and submit a form at the end (either use Live Chat option).

If you feel that your issue is urgent or cannot contact a support via website, please post the issue on the forum - we will do our best to address it as soon as we can.

I call that EXCELLENT customer support.Acronis - I pay good money for your software!ARE YOU LISTENING?

Yes, we surely do. I will help you with this situation. I have checked the case I found from you in our database and consulted with my colleague - Vladimir, who confirmed that he worked with you and you were able to resolve all your queries. Anyway, if you still have any questions - please feel free to ask me or Vladimir, we would be glad to assist you.

Jon, I have found that your issue is related to "Missing Boot Manager" error in Vista, after recovery to SSD.

Could you please confirm if you tried this solution:

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the CD\DVD disc drive, and then (re)start the computer;
2. Press a key when you are prompted;
3. Select language, time, currency, keyboard or input method, and then click Next;
4. Click Repair your computer;
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next;
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt;
7. Type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

If you want to completely rebuild Boot Configuration Data, then you should issue the following command:
Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
This command scans all disks for installations that are compatible with Windows Vista. Additionally, this option lets you select the installations that you want to add to the Boot Configuration Data store.

If this does not help, please collect Acronis Report and attach it to your answer in this thread:

  • Download Acronis Report utility from http://download.acronis.com/support/AcronisReport51.exe
  • Run Acronis Report utility and select the Create bootable media option;
  • Insert a blank CD or a flash drive and proceed with creating the bootable media;
  • Boot the computer under consideration from the created media. Choose Safe version if you are going to save the report to an internal hard disk. Choose Full version if you are going to save the report to a network share or external USB disk. Wait for report creation process to complete;
  • Acronis Report will appear on the selected media as report.txt.

I'd like to make sure all your queries regarding Acronis products are resolved.
Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Best regards,
