Exchange SBS2011 DB Restore Fails when held on different Partition

Thread needs solution

Hi,
Just checking if anybody else has this issue. I do have a case logged with Acronis but in the meantime seeing of others have this issue.

SBS2011 with Exchange
Exchange DB restores Sucessfully if held in the original location C:\
Exchange DB FAILS to restore if it is held on a different "Virtual Hard Disk" E:\

Message: Failed to get database file 'E:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\Mailbox Database\Mailbox Database.edb'.

I checked that it was seeing the E:\ drive by doing a "File restore" and E Drive is there and I can manually select the DB file.

I have tested this with Fresh Backups for each and also using versions 5155 and 5144.

Note: The strange part is that restoring either Mailboxes OR Mailbox Content work fine, in turn shows it is indeed backing up correctly.

I suspect a bug and will report back when if Acroins Support find anything.

Hello Paddy,

Thank you for your post.

We appreciate your update and the issue that you reported has been forwarded to our Development team.

A member of our Expert Team is in charge of your case and I am certain that we will get to the bottom of this issue.

I apologize for any inconvenience and if you have additional questions please let me know.

Thank you.

Further to above I did some more tests as a matter of interest.

NEW TEST:
I decided to create a new Partition within the OS Virtual Disk to rule out any potential issue if using a Different Virtual Hard Drive for Exchange.
In turn Partition Drive F: created and Exchange DB was moved here from Drive E.

Exchange DB Restore Results:  It does Fail and path looks correct being F Drive.
Message: Failed to get database file 'F:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\Mailbox Database\Mailbox Database.edb'.

MANUALLY RESTORE DB: If I go to do a "File Recovery" Acronis sees E Drive as F and F Drive as E

Recovery Point Contents
C:\  which is hidden partition
D:\ is the OS
E:\ is Exchange (This is wrong, this should be F Drive)
F:\ is Apps (This is wrong, this should be E Drive)

Now I won't try to guess whether this is normal but seems strange.  I am eagerly waiting some type of feedback/solution in this as I can't use or offer the software in this complicated state.    Not sure if above add's any insight to issue?

NOTE: Recovery of Exchange "Mailbox" or "Mailbox Content" is Sucessful

Hi Paddy,

Please note SBS2011 is not supported by Vmware
So its doubtfull if its supported bij Acronis VMProtect.

Since when is it not vmware compatible? It is fully supported last I checked and have been using it without issue for 3 months now. Remember, SBS2011 is really just Standard Server 2008R2 with Exchange 2010 and Sharepoint on top.
vmProtect also works fine for most things. Just the Exchange component has a few restore bugs but for the most part works fine with some work arounds for now.

Read it somewere on this page:

http://www.vmware.com/technical-resources/advantages/guest-os.html

Not sure wat is meant with the information on this page. But it states that SBS2011 is unsupported under VMware vSphere 5

I tend to more go with this:
SBS 2011 is not an OS but rather a suite which includes Windows Server 2008R2 and Exchange 2010 bundled.....................so perfectly compatible running as a VM

http://communities.vmware.com/message/2011486

I have been running it myself for a few months trouble free.  If in doubt call vmware support and Acronis.  Don't take our word for it as it is their products.

VMware support is actually top notch. I tried it last month and I didn't expect the level of support that I got from them.
