Want to use a new hard drive - cloning?
I have two laptops one (Toshiba) with a bad motherboard (I guess) but a good hard drive and all the software I use. I also have a second lap top (Gateway) that is good in every respect but I want the software replaced with the Toshiba software. Can I do this with Acronis Home 2011 True Image?
I also have a 500 GB WD external hard drive that has some data stored on it. I was going to transfer the data from the hard drive of the Toshiba onto the WD external hard drive and then onto the hard drive in the Gateway.
I got started doing this by giong to Utilities and Clone and select the source drive (toshiba) and the destination drive (WD). However, when I select the destination drive, I am told that the drive has partitions with useful data, and if I click OK I will delete all the partitions on the destination drive. I don't want this data lost.
I am not a computer expert by any means. Can anyone give me an answer on what I need to do here or is it possible with Acronix?
Thanks.

Thanks for your post. I will look into the Plus Pack.
I wish there was some way to avoid writing over my WD. I guess I can move all of that data to another hard drive.
One last question, will I be able to move the data from toshiba drive to WD and then to Gateway drive using the Plus Pack.

Yes, don't use cloning. Use Disk and Partition backup instead. See Grover's Guides http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3426 section 7-B and section 8 AH to AF.

In theory yes but its not fool proof. You will need all the drivers for your Gateway MB see Grover's Guides http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3426 section 7-B

Thanks much, let me look this over and see if I understand it. I am not sure I understand how to get drivers for my Gateway MB (motherboard?). I note that my Gateway works fine now except I want to replace the software and operating system. Am I understanding your point correctly that I will need to download the drivers for my Gateway motherboard if I am replacing all the software that currently is on it.
Thanks again for your posts.

Yes, the key drivers will be for the disk controller on the gateway MB.

William,
After you have installed the Plus Pack, create a new recovery CD.
Using the recovery CD or ATI install in WIndows, create a disk and partition backup that includes all the partitions of the disk in your Toshiba, and store that backup on your external CD.
If you have the same version of Windows installed on the Gateway, simply copy the Windows\System32\Drivers folder to the backup drive as well. If it is a different version of Windows, copy the Gateway motherboard drivers in the INF format.
Boot the Gateway on the recovery CD, choose restore whole disk and partitions, turn on Universal Restore and follow the instructions THomasJK shared.
