Backup & Recovery 11 Workstation - multiple issues
First of all, I have never had so many problems with a backup software before. I must have been temporarily insane to purchase this software. I won't even get into the horrifying issue I had when trying to upgrade True Image Echo Enterprise to BAR on my main data server. I don't want the trauma to return.
I am using BAR 11 Workstation on my laptop. The VSS does not work, nor has it ever. Most days when I boot up I get an error saying the managed machine service is unavailable. My backups won't run until I go into the services and manually start the MM service, even though it is set to Automatic. Now I am trying to update to the latest release in hopes of solving these issues but the installation fails. Why am I surprised? I am trying to install release 17437.
Can anyone shine some light on this issue? I am very close to trashing this software and buying something reliable like Shadowprotect.
thanks

If it's an error during installation, more detailed error description is in msi log. You can either find it in temporary directory under a folder with GIUD name, such as "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\8178E7D6-88F3-4C3D-8991-CAAD4818DB79" , or run it again and save it as described in http://kb.acronis.com/content/1639#abr

The error log is attached. Let me know if you see anything. Thanks!

1: MSIGEN:GrantUserPrivileges: Failed to grant priviledge(sic) 'SeServiceLogonRight' to user '.\localsystem' with error code '1780'
Looks like Acronis Managed Machine Service is running under "Local System" account, and installer failed to add required privileges to it.
It should be run under 'regular' user, like administrator or a service account created for it. Go to services, change its user to, say, administrator and try to update again.

It is installing now after changing the logon user in the service. Thanks for that. I changed it to my local account that is in the administrators group.
However, I just got a pop-up message from my system tray that said "Acronis Managed Machine Service is Unavailable". I thought changing the logon user in the service would take care of that issue as well. Guess not. So I just checked the services and even though I started the MMS after I changed the user logon and it started successfully, it is now stopped again. Trying to start it gives me an "error 1069: The service did not start due to a logon failure". It started fine before I began the installation.

Interesting...when I checked my local account, it was locked out. Something tried unsuccessfully to login using that account, it would appear. I unlocked it and now the MMS will start. ???

MMS still will not start at bootup and now ABR 11 will not start. I get an error saying "Cannot connect to localhost". I changed the user from my local user to the Acronis Agent User but didn't know the password so I had to change that so I could enter it into the logon for the service. Now nothing runs. The MMS service says it starts, but when I refresh I see that it is not started.
WTF is wrong with this software? Should I just uninstall it and reinstall?

I am uninstalling. Can't take it anymore. I will try reinstalling.

changed the user from my local user to the Acronis Agent User but didn't know the password
You can set it whatever password using 'net user' command and type the same in the service properties. This password is not stored anywhere else.

Thanks dev-anon. I reinstalled. I just couldn't spend any more time on it. This time, when I told it to install a new user to handle the program it listed the Acronis Agent user as the login user for the service. I downloaded the new release dated today for the install. I just completed a full backup so it looks like I'm good to go. Thank you for your help!

Perhaps I jinxed myself. I spoke too soon yesterday. When I booted up this morning I got the same "Acronis Managed Machine Service Unavailable" error. I checked the services and the MMS is indeed stopped. I am unable to start the service as it gives me an error about a logon failure. The Acronis Agent User is the logon user. What is the deal with this? It's driving me nuts.
Any help would be much appreciated. I just want it to work normally.

Possible reasons : the user which is used to run the service has no 'log on as a service' privilege
or password is incorrect or the user is locked out after logon failures.
To check 'log on as a service' , run gpedit.msc , computer configuration -> windows settings ->security->local policies->user right assignments,
who is listed in 'log on as a service' item, this user should be there.
If you don't know the password of "Acronis Agent User", change it to some you know using
net user "Acronis Agent User" newpassword
command, change to the same in the service properties, try to start it. If it fails (or when it fails again) run any command (notepad...) with right click - run as (on XP) of shift+rightclick (on windows 7) and specifty this user and password. I hav eno concrete actionplan though as the whole situation is rather weird.
And - is your workstation in domain where some restrictions on user rights (like logon as service) may be deployed from domain controller?

The Acronis Agent User was not listed in the Log on as a service rights. However, my domain account is listed there. So I changed the logon for the MMS to my domain user. The service started. I was under the impression that the ABR installation would give the agent user log on as a service privileges. I am not aware of domain restrictions but they may exist. Although, as stated, my domain user does have this privilege. Hopefully this will do it. Thank you again. You have been very helpful. You ARE a Forum Star! :)
