[RESOLVED] ATI 2011 - bootable rescue media - saving the system report on USB does not work [Case 00970454]
i have booted from CD build 14.0.6574
i then fire up acronis system report.
it's prompting: Please plug in a USB flash drive.
once i have done this it says:
The system report was saved in F:\AcronisSystemReport_Nov_29__2010_10_18_09_PM.zip.
Press Enter to reboot your computer...
however, there will be no such file on the USB device!
i have tried with SD-card via external USB card reader and also with external HDD via USB. no luck.
- CPU: dualcore Intel Core i5 660 (with integrated graphics)
- chipset: iQ57 (Intel Ibex Peak Q57, Intel Ironlake)
is this a known bug?
or is it because of my hardware?
cheers, philipp
Issue resolved here.

As build 6574 has been withdrawn, you won't get very far in opening a support ticket.
Did it work with build 5519? I suggest waiting until the replacement build for 6574 is released and then retest.

i have tried with:
- bootable CD: ATI Home 2011 Plus Pack 14.0.6574 (self made)
- bootable CD: ATI Home 2011 Plus Pack 14.0.5105 (original, boxed CD)
both don't write anything to the device attached via USB.
so it's not specific to build 6574. it also happens with build 5105.
thanks, philipp

Philip,
In your account should be build 5519, download that one and see if that one works.
What format is your USB flash drive?
Some USB drives report themselves to Windows in different ways. It might be that the utility is expecting a USB removable drive rsther than a flash drive. Some USB flash drives do report themselves as removable hard drives others don't.

i have tried with:
- USB SD card reader (single device, no multi-card reader)
- USB HDD
in windows both report as regular "USB mass storage device".
acronis system report will detect that i attached the device and claims it has written the zip file to that device. which is not true.
i have also tried:
- plug in an SD card into the multi-card reader that is built into my PC
in this case nothing will happen. acronis does not detect that i plugged in the SD card.

i have just opened support ticket [Case 00970454].
so i'm adjusting the thread's subject line accordingly.

when i fire up ATI from bootable media there's an option to create the system report from within ATI. so i'm attaching that system report, instead.

i have just tried with the following, also:
- bootable CD: ATI Home 2011 Plus Pack 14.0.6597 (iso download)
same results. acronis says it had written the report to USB. but there will be nothing on the USB device.

It may be attempting to write to a usb device but not the correct usb device. Also, some usb flashdrives have dual partitions.

in the meantime i seem to have found an USB device that works. in total it seems to be as follows:
1) external HDD (FAT32) via USB: FAIL !!
2) SD card (FAT) via USB card reader: FAIL !!
3) USB stick (FAT): OK
and i got a reply by customer support. they say that the only supported device was an "USB flash drive". in other words: an "USB stick" or "USB thumbs drive". so that's why the USB HDD and SD card failed.
however, they have not clearly confirmed back that my observations are caused by a bug in the acronis software which requires fixing.
to me it looks like a bug for sure:
a) in all three cases the software properly detects that i attached some device to the USB port and starts further action. it then states it successfully wrote the zip file to that device. but it did not.
b) i'm wondering where it wrote the data to, in the end. did it corrupt some data on whatever device?
c) the interesting thing is that i can boot from the rescue media and fire up acronis true image. i then attach whatever USB device and invoke the rystem report from within the true image application menu. in this scenario it is writing fine to all three USB devices: SD card, USB HDD, USB stick. so i don't really understand why it should be a known restriction when doing the system report from the rescue media directly, but the system report via rescue media's true image works fine.

Philippgg,
The problem might be due to how the drive reports itself to Windows, some removable drives report themselves as hard drives others report as removable. Windows itself doesn't allow certain transactions to and from removable drives. Having said that, I would expect it to have a problem with flash drives (USB sticks) rather than removable USB hard drives.

thanks for your comments, colin.
i have support ticket 00970454 in the loop for more than 7 months, now.
i just wanted to keep the public in the loop to state that the issue still has not been fixed with most recent build 6868

update: acronis CS finally has confirmed that it's a known restriction and the software currently does not include error handling for this particular scenario.
it took them 18 months to finally understand, reproduce and confirm this issue ...
can you imagine how many emails i have sent? can you imagine how much time i have spent by following the instructions to try the latest builds, provide system reports, explaining the problem symptoms over and over again?
well, the support representative on the phone was very kind, i have to admit. he apologized for the misunderstanding and the major delay.
actually i'm convinced that my problem description was precise and clear right from the beginning. at least starting with my update from 2011-07-27.
hence - despite the kind apologies - i lost all confidence in the acronis software quality and the support ticket handling.
this conclusion is drawn from various issues i have dealt with in the past 18 months or so.

Hello Philipp, Colin and Grover,
Thank you for opening this thread and keeping it updated.
Philipp, I am terribly sorry for all the inconvenience you faced during troubleshooting this issue.
Colin, Grover, I appreciate your suggestions.
Philipp, as you wrote recently, the behavior was confirmed as expected. The expected functionality of the System Report Utility as a separate component is described in the User Guide and states as follows:
You can place the tool on your bootable rescue media as a separate component to be able to generate a system report when your computer cannot boot. After you boot from the media, you will be able to generate the report even without running Acronis True Image Home 2011. In this case you should plug in a USB flash drive before clicking the Acronis System Report icon. The generated report will be saved on the USB flash drive.
It is really a pity that a misunderstanding of the core issue led to such a long paced troubleshooting, taking lots of your time. To escape such situations in future I would recommend to always submit the screen shots and a step-by-step description and making sure that the issue is understood correctly.
If you need additional help, please let me know.
Thank you.
