Acronis B&R 10 on Small Business Server 2003 stops working frequently

Thread needs solution

Hello community,

I have the following problem with my installation of B&R 10 on a SBS2003 Server:

Every one or two weeks it just stops working. I notice that because I no longer get any status mails from acronis. When I check the dash board there are no errors. Everything is green.

But when I look a little closer there are no backup tasks in the log for each day, just the licence checking task (that's why I get green fields for the given days). When I check the status of my scheduled backup tasks I find the last taks that should have run when acronis stopped working is in the status "waiting". So I stop it. Then they are all idle. When I now try to start any of the taks I get an error claiming that there is already another task running. When I try to start the taks that I just stopped I get an error claiming that THIS taks is already running (though its in the "idle" status in the schedule overview).

So I try to restart the "Acronis Managed Machine Service" to see if that clears things up but the attempt fails with "Error 1053: Service not responding". After waiting a few minutes I'm able to restart the service but without any change to the situation explained above.

When I restart the Small Business Server acronis runs just fine for another week or two until the whole things starts again.

Does anybody have any suggestions what I should do? Might reinstalling acronis solve the problem?

Thanks in advance for any good suggestion!

Regards
Malte

P.S.: Here's another thing I have noticed: Before acronis stops working I find errors in the windows system log of the same day (i.e. prior to the first backup task that is NOT working) saying that a service named "Advanced Monitoring Agent" stopped working and all attemps to restart it failed. Is there any connection or dependency between Acronis B&R and this service?

Hello Malte,

Thank you for using Acronis software.

Your issue can be resolved following this steps:

  • Start the Acronis License Server and revoke the related Acronis License.
  • Go to Start -> Run -> services.msc stop and start the Acronis Managed Machine Service.

Please check this article for additional information.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

thank you for your response!

I did as you suggested and will now test if it solves the problem. I'll let you know how it works out.

One question out of curiosity though: If it's a license issue why does Acronis work just fine for one or two weeks after I restarted the server and then suddenly stops working?

Regards
Malte

Hello Malte,

this issue comes out, while Acronis Licenses are always be bound to the NIC, that is used during the Installation. An Microsoft Small Business Server is also using a number of additional virtual NIC's, that possible can cause this issue. Unfortunately it is not possible to change this behavior.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

thanks for the explanation. Sounds odd to me though since Acronis was running fine for the last 2 years or so and suddenly starts acting like that!

Anyways I did as you suggested and tested if it resolves the problem. It did not. Saturday the backups stopped working again. Same behaviour as described above.

I't be nice if you had any more suggestions to solve the problem. :)

Thanks in advance!

Malte

Hello Malte,

Tank You for your reply.

Have you entered the IP Adress and restarted all Acronis Sevices, also recreated all backup plans?

It's very important to follow all steps in order to get your Backup up and running

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

I didn't recreate the backup plans. I will do so and let you know if it fixes the probem.

Thank you!

Malte

Hi Peter,

it's me again. I did exactly as you suggested but on Friday the backups stopped working again!

The same behaviour as described above.

Do you have other suggestions for me what to do? Might reinstalling B&R solve my problems?

Thanks again.

Regards
Malte
