Can't restore a backup

Thread needs solution

Guys I am trying to restore a machine to a new machine. I am using the PLUS version so I have the dissimilar hardware option but I can't even get that far. My first problem is that my disk is dynamic so I can't get Clone Disk to work. So I did a backup of my drive by partition to one USB drive. I then want to restore this drive to a second USB drive so it isn't dynamic and then clone again or use it to back up and restore. Sounds confusing but my goal is to replicate this installation of windows with another machine all together.

When I go to restore I select my back up and it brings up the "Disk Recovery" menu. There it will let me select version (I only have one) but my source and destination are blank! There is nothing loaded. I have even backed up the partition again with no success - the same exact problem not allowing me to restore to the second USB drive.

Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Neil

Neil,
I not sure why you are using so many steps. Once you backup your system by partition to the external USB drive, you should be able to attach the USB drive to the new machine, boot using your Recovery Disk/USB stick and do a restore from the USB drive using the Universal Restore option. If you start with a basic drive in the new system, the resulting drive after restore will still be basic.
When you backup a dynamic disk, you are right to do a partition backup since a disk backup is not possible. I have many times used Acronis True Image Home 2011 / 2012 with Plus Pack to convert a dynamic disk to a basic disk. The method I use is to backup by partition to an external USB/eSATA/Firewire/etc. drive. If I am keeping the old drive as is, I place a new target drive into my system and boot to the Recovery Disk/USB flash stick and restore the partitions one at a time resizing them as needed to fit the new target disk. I then restore the MBR/boot track last. The resulting target disk is then a basic disk as opposed to being a dynamic disk. At this point you can clone to another drive, or make a new full disk backup to be used to restore to a new machine with Universal Restore. If I don't want to keep my original drive as dynamic but want to change it to basic, I just restore using the same steps as above but leave the original disk installed, and choose Tools and Utilities on the Recovery Disk/ USB flash stick Add a New Drive option and delete the existing partitions on the drive by creating a new MBR disk layout before beginning the restore process so that the dynamic drive information is deleted.
