Can't reinstall Acronis TIH 2010 in Windows 7
I have Win7 Home Premium 64-bit and have been using TIH 2010 Nonstop Backup since early 2010 with absolutely no problems up till now. Three days ago it stopped working (i.e., the program would *run* normally and give no indication of any problems, but the NS backup, in terms of generating files within the Time Explorer Storage folder, would not progress at all, even after running overnight), so I figured I would uninstall the program and reinstall it from scratch, which I (almost) did. I did the uninstall successfully and then ran the install program from the original CD, but it got to a point where the following error message popped up, and the installation stopped and backed out. I repeated this sequence twice and decided to try asking for help on this forum.

Since I've been using the program successfully for over two years, why should it stop working at this time, when my Windows is fully updated and running perfectly, and why won't it reinstall? I am now without TIH. How can I get the program to reinstall? Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestion, Pat, but I'm out of Restore Points to a point before this started. Looks like Acronis is a dead issue for me.

The error message your are seeing is usually from a corrupted installation or update that was attempted on your system. This will affect other program installations as well if not corrected. If you have any Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 entries in your installed programs list, you should first try and remove them. You can try installing both the 64bit version and 32bit version of the Visual C++ 2005 redistributable packages from Microsoft. 64bit here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18471. 32bit here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=18471. Your issue is related to Visual C++ redistributable package corruption, and you may have other issues with the Windows installer on your system as well. These would be a good place to start troubleshooting your system.
If you don't have a current backup of your system, you should perform one while booted up to your Acronis Recovery Disk prior to attempting the repairs. Attempting these repairs/installs could create even more problems for you, but is the only way to test for a solution. It if makes your system worse off, you then could then restore back to where you started from. Another option to consider is doing a repair installation of Windows 7. Was this system upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7?

Thank you for your suggestions! I found 9 of the Visual C++ redistributable packages installed on my PC, from various dates. After making a System Restore and a full backup, as you suggested, I deleted all of the installed packages and downloaded the two new ones from the Microsoft Download Center. The 64-bit one installed with no problem but the x86 (32-bit) one continually failed with the message

The only option is to click on OK. I'll reboot now and see if anything has changed for the better or worse.

First try this:
1. Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right-click on Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator" > Click "Allow" for the elevation prompt
2. Execute the following command:
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
The command above assumes C: is the system volume. If the Operating System is installed on an alternate partition ( e.g. D: ), edit the command accordingly.
3. Reboot the system.
4. Try the 32 bit C++ 2005 package again.
If it still fails, you need to reset your .Net framework.
Verify your .Net framework. Start with the .Net framework verification tool at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx. You should have several versions, check each version. If you have any failures, try and un-install all of the .Net frameworks, from your system. If you have any problems removing them, you can then use a tool to force a removal located here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2005/04/08/406671.aspx. After removing all your .Net versions, download and install http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=25150. After installing .Net 3.5 SP1, besure to check for and install all Windows updates. Then retry the 32bit Visual C++ 2005 package. If you need .Net 4.0 support, you can download and install it later.

Thanks for your detailed advice. I did everything you suggested, and nothing worked, except uninstalling. Everything I tried to install after that bombed out with error messages. So I did a System Restore back to the point before the first uninstallation and everything is working again except Acronis. Judging from this, it looks like my system is munged up. It looks like my only recourse to fix all these problems is a Windows repair install. I'm looking into that now.

Sorry about all the hoop jumping, but those are the most common troubleshooting steps for the type of problem you are experiencing. The interaction with Windows installer, the .Net framework, and the Visual C++ redist. packages once corrupted are extremely difficult to find and correct, esp. over forum posts. I have found, much to my dismay, that even a Windows 7 repair install sometimes will not chase out the demons you have. I have had to start with a clean install on Windows 7 on several systems with similar problems. Chasing your tail sometimes can end up taking as long as starting over. If you do start from scratch, use the Acronis recovery disk to take an image of your virgin Windows 7 install before installing other apps just in case you need it later. Good luck.

On the plus side, I've got my Acronis recovery disc (made way back when I installed the latest update for TIH 2010 in 2011), a full Acronis system backup (.tib) on my external drive from January 2011, which means I can restore my working system to that point, a set of system recovery discs I made of the computer right after I bought it (with no installed software), and I've got an official Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS installation disc with which I can try a repair install or do a fresh install. On the minus side, the decision is somewhat difficult because I've got a lot of good free software (from GiveawayOfTheDay and other sources) that I've gotten used to and don't want to lose, but it will be lost if I reinstall. If this were a case where the system went down and I couldn't boot and there was no other option but to reinstall, I'd be forced into it. As it is now I'm in a sort of "twilight" area where I can use and enjoy my computer, but I'm limited as to what I can install and do. At some point, there will come a time when I have no choice. At that time I'll probably choose first to do the repair install, then failing that, the full Acronis restore back to Jan. 2011, and then try to reinstall my files, documents, and other bits & pieces from my current backup.
