How to create a dual boot Windows 7 and XP system using independent acronis backup images

Thread needs solution

Hi all

I've a backup image of Windows 7 created by Acronis Home Image 2010 which came with my laptop. After that for some reason, I had to install Windows XP after formatting the whole drive and I made backup image of Windows XP.

Now I would like to have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Windows XP both installed. What I would like to know now if is it possible to restore/create a dual boot system with the help of these two independent backup images of windows.

Is it possible to restore Windows 7 first on one drive (say C) and then restore Windows XP on other drive (D:) then fix the MBR using EasyBCD??

Please kindly give suggestions.

It should work fine to do that. You should just need to adjust/fix the BCD and probably also adjust the XP boot.ini file so it references the correct partition. TI should update the registry so C: references the "booted" Windows partition (C: is Windows partition when booted to Windows 7, C: is XP partition when booted to XP). If not, that change can be done use DD or manually from Windows 7.

I would do as you suggest and restore Windows 7 first. Get it working and then proceed to restore the XP partition and update the booting files.
