one other question
I've decided to "startover" on my backups and I am having a problem deleteing previously created backup files from my external backup drives. The error code is that explorer says it can't find these files anymore.
What is the correct way to delete the previously created files? I have about 500GBs of previous stored info that needs to be deleted (several .tib extentions), and several tib files because of the amount of data stores. Seems like each >tib file contains about 3.9GB of info.
I need to wipe the disk free of tibs and start over and would like to know the easiest way to do this if possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all,
Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]
DwnNDrty,
Doug uses Acronis True Image Home 2009. Acronis True Image Home 2009 stores information about the backup archives in a metadata information database, you must manage backup archives (e.g. delete some of them) by using the program's tools and not Windows Explorer. To manage your backup archives, go to the Manage and restore screen by clicking Manage and Restore on the Welcome screen or selecting Backup and Restore -> Manage and Restore on the sidebar.
Doug,
If you prefer to wipe the external hard drive by means of Windows Explorer, you should restart Acronis scheduler to avoid the possible errors in the program functionality. You can do it in the following way:
- Download a special Acronis utility;
- Start the Command Prompt from Start -> Programs -> Accessories menu;
- Run the following commands in the folder you saved the file to:
schedmgr task zap
schedmgr service stop
schedmgr service uninstall
schedmgr service install
schedmgr service start
This will delete all traces from the scheduler.
Thank you.

Thank you for the help...this worked.
One other newbee ?:
When backing up data I'm still not sure as to which method to use (incremental or differential) to maximize my storage space on my storage disk. All I want is one complete copy of current data on my main system. I don't make many changes on a weekly basis and it appears both methods add to the existing backups, using more storage. Do I have to manually delete previous backups or can I set the system to eliminate older backups and keep only the newest to maximize my storage disk. What settings do you suggest? The help manual is a little vague on this....I just want to maintain one current backup (of my main system C & D drives) on my storage disk which is a 1TB Western Digital drive used solely for backups. I backup about 500GB of info on weekly basis....seems to take forever so any ideas on this aspect would also be appreciated.

Hello Doug,
Thank you for your response.
An incremental backup contains all changes that have been made since the latest incremental or full backup was created. If one full backup and several incremental were created, all of these backups must be saved in the same folder so that you will be able to restore the data. If one of incremental backups or a full backup is deleted, there is no way to restore the set, since all backups are dependent on each other.
A differential backup contains all changes that have been made after the full backup creation. To restore a differential backup, Acronis True Image must match the differential backup with the original one.
So, If your objective is to reduce backup size and backup time, then the best strategy would be to create incremental backups. On the other hand, if you want to increase backup reliability, by not having to rely on a chain of incremental backups, then differential backups would be the best solution.
If you want to use the differential backup method and to delete the intermediate differential backups, you should upgrade your license to Acronis True Image Home 2010. Acronis True Image Home 2009 deletes the entire chain of the differential files except the full one. The possibility to remove a part of the chain has been implemented for Acronis True Image Home 2010.
I may recommend you to install a trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 in order to make sure that the program runs flawless for you.
If you would like to purchase the upgrade to Acronis True Image Home 2010, please visit the Acronis online store.
Thank you.

Hello all,
Here is description how to properly delete, move and rename backup archives in Acronis True Image Home 2010.
Acronis True Image Home 2010 keeps a database of the created backup archives and their location on the machine. The product refers to this database to display the available backup archives and work with them. The database is stored in the following folder:
/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Acronis/TrueImageHome/Database/archives.xml
When you change the backup archive or its location outside of Acronis True Image Home (e.g. move, rename or delete it in Windows Explorer), the database is not updated.
In case you want to rename, move or delete backup archive using Acronis True Image Home 2010 you should go to Recovery - > Right-click the backup and choose the desired action. Now you have your backup renamed, moved or delete and the information in the database of the product is up to date and correct.
Check the following KB article for more details “Moving or Renaming Acronis True Image Home 2010 Backups”
Let me know if you have any questions..
Thank You.
