Cloning Fails after reboot step
I have used the clone disk function for years now in successive versions of Acronis.
My habit is to wake up every saturday morning and make an exact duplicate of my laptop drive via an identical removable drive.
This has worked without fault in all previous versions for several years.
After purchasing 2012 I now find that this no longer works.
I select the clone option, select the source drive, select the target drive and press next.
The system warns me that the target drive will be over written and that a reboot is required (correct). The laptop reboots and the Acronis Autoloader starts.
Then (so quickly that I cannot see it) a message flashes up saying that 'failed to .....) might be lock source disk?.
Then the laptop reboots again but the imaging does not begin.
Anyone have any ideas. Nothing has changed. I am at a loss.
Just in case I had stuffed up the install I re installed Acronis 12 but it made no difference.

Hi,
I have the same Problems since I use the Version 2012.
In my case I can clone my Harddrive only with the recovery CD.
That's sad, that this functionality isn't working anymore correctly

I am in the same boat: I recently upgraded to 2012, and have new i7 Dell laptop w/USB 3.0 ext. hard drive, when I clone TIH controls the boot and it starts but there's a message that flashes so quick I can't see it, and then it's normal reboot to Win7 with no errors or success messages. I also was able to get it to work with the recovery CD, however it clearly is not running an optimized SATA driver for my laptop drive controller because the imaging time is way too slow.
Sadly yours, but imaged finally.

I have had the same problem. You must start the computer with the recovery CD. Then it works. The clone-work will be successful.

Yes I can get the CD to work, but it doesn't load optimized drivers for my laptop's 750GB SATA II drive, and I'm cloning to a USB 3.0 1TB external drive and it takes almost two hours to image my 2 partitions which have only 177GB of data total. I've gone back to TIH 11 and it's a bit faster and works as installed without having to use the CD. I hope they're working on a patch, clearly I'm not the only one having this problem, in fact, it looks prevalent!!! :-(

Vista 64 HP desktop.
2010 version clone worked OK (internal 500 GB SATA to USB 2 500 GB external)
2012 version clone bombs just like all earlier comments.
Boot from CD clone works but is s-l-o-w.
I too hope for a patch SOON!

Same problem. They need to get his fixed.
Anyone know of a clone program that works?

Use the recovery CD to boot your computer on it, then do the clone from the recovery CD.

I didn't buy the program too use a boot disk. I trust a fix is in the future. I bought Acronis for the clone feature. Clone stopped working late last year with 2011, so I bought 2012 for a fix, wrong, problem still exists. I will try the boot disk method.

Just tried the boot disk and it didn't work either. Got the same message as before "clone disk failed". I don't want backups I want a clone of my drive C: once a month. I use 2nd Copy for every day use.

Richard,
From the Windows version is there any other information listed in the log file about the clone failure? If you are cloning the drive with the OS on it this is best doen from the CD.
Could you detail your setup, that is, where is the source and destination drive installed? Is this a laptop?
Have you run chkdsk /r on both source and destination drives?

Hi Colin,
I have run clone from both the OS & CD. Both have failed. I am cloning a 400GB drive on my main computer to a Maxtor One Touch 300GB USB drive. Lots of room left over after the clone. I run Win 7 /64bit Prof. with 4 GB of memory. Si computer, Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70 GHz. The Acronis log shows nothing. I have just run chkdsk /R on both hard drives with no problems shown. Tomorrow afternoon I will run the clone program again from the CD unless you tell me different. Both my laptop & my wife's computer clone with no problems to external drives.
Thank You,
Richard

Richard,
The source disk isn't encyrpted with TrueCrypt?
I have a feeling you might need to see what happens if you take the disk out of the OneTouch caddy and install it in either a plain caddy or the actual PC itself.
First though, it might be a good idea to re-install TIH just in case there is a file corrupted in your previous install, or, download the recovery SO from your account burn it to a CD using ISO burning software and see if that works.
Do the laptops clone OK to the OneTouch drive?

The best chance of success is when the target disk is blank or unallocated. As you have had several failures. my suggestion would be to boot from the TI bootable media CD and use the "add new disk" option and delete the existing partitions on the target disk before retrying a new cloning.
If the computer is a Thinkpad, target disk will need to be mounted inside the computer in its intended boot position before cloning. It is also this placement which is recommended by Acronis for any cloning.

Hang on, I had written below until I spotted a problem.
Richard, you mention the OneTouch is 300GB in size and the source drive is 400GB, when you say clone are you definitely cloning or are you making a complete disk image? I would expect a cloning (that is a direct copy of one drive to another drive, no intermediate container file or compression) in this circumstance to fail, a hundred GB difference I would think is too great for the minor partition resizing algorithm. How much free space does the 400Gb drive have?
**written prior to the above***
I think the reason, whatever it is, that 2011 did clone and suddenly stopped, and now 2012 won't clone, is the starting point for finding the cause. Were there any hardware changes to the PC's/laptops or anything different with the destination drive between this working and suddenly not working?
The fact that it works on some computers and now suddenly doesn't on one particular one (if I understand correctly) says to me this sounds like a hardware problem, especially if the CD version worked and now doesn't, if we only know for certain that the Windows based version worked at one time, there are further possibilities such as flaky RAM or Windows somehow locking the drives.

Hi Colin
I found no problems when I ran /R on either disk. This AM I ran the clone program from the CD and it worked. I have no clue as to why it works now and didn't before. A long time engineer friend of mine has a statement that covers situations like this. The "Enate Perversity Of An Inanimate Object" or I guess to shorten it up "Murphy's Law". It would appear that chkdsk /R solved what ever problem existed.
Thank You,
Richard

The results of the chkdsk can be found in the Events option under the Applications section.
Did you use the "add new disk" option?

This "clone problem" is really dishartening.. I have used Acronis 2009 and its clone feature for the past 3 years - I use it regularly and it
always works, you dont need to boot from the install CD (which wont work for me since I am RAID) If this problem doesnt get fixed fast
I will return 2012 to Frys

Patrick,
It has always been and probably always will be advisable to clone the disk that contains the operating system from the recovery CD. That is purely down to the way in which MS Windows works, many times there will be no problem cloning from within Windows, but it is always better for Windows not to be in the equation in this regard.
Have you checked to see if you have a problem or are you just assuming that you will ahve one? If you do have a problem then post it here and the community might be able to help you out.

No I am having REAL problems!! As I mentioned, I cant use the recovery disk because my HDD is RAID. I had the BART PE all setup for the RAID driver with 2009 but I cant get PE BUILDER to work so I can build another rever disk using 2012.
I cant clone from MS Windows because of the Acronis bug

once again I have to say something about this
yet my problem is solved by using recovery cd which makes cloning a disk unobjectionable again in 2012 acronis
and indeed the cloning functionality is a very good design for lazy and insecure people like myself
but I believed that people bought it did not expect to use it by another so called recovery cd just to make it work
yes it achieves the same goal at the end of the day
but still I think acronis company should fix the bug as soon as possible to meet the expectation and demand where it should be at the first place
using a recovery cd to make the job down its almost like a temporary solution like I always did to the client if and which they always are in rush
as a responsible company
please solve the problem and come out with a updated package or something like that soon in which a lot people have been waiting for

I have tried twice to clone and entire disk and each time the cloning fails at the reboot - the PC just boots up as if nothing happened. I have never had a problem doing this same operation using Acronis 2009.
The operation I tried to do is: to clone two attached drive that are not currently in use. One of the drives is
RAID and the other plain ole ACHI SATA. I get the message "a reboot is required" and then the PC goes thru the shutdown and comes up normally - with no clone???
I have had enough problems with 2012, that I uninstalled it and went back to 2009..

The only reason I purchased this software was to get access to the disk clone facility. I have the exact same issue as those above. If you can't get this fixed very quickly your product is of no use to me and I will expect a refund of the purchase price and financial compensation for my wasted time.

Jeffrey,
What OS are you cloning?
Are you cloning from within Windows or from the recovery CD?
Is this a RAID or Basic disk?
As there are a number of topics in this thread, exactly what problem are you having?

Hi Colin,
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Cloning from within Windows
SATA connected disks
From Corsair X128 128GB SSD (C: disk0) to new Samsung 830 256GB SSD(Unallocated disk 3)
Disks are AHCI in Bios and both MBR in Windows
Clone (automatic) -> select source -> select destination -> OK -> reboot
Acronis ... loading -> plain screen with hourglass (5s) -> plain screen with pointer (15s) -> large form/box flashes up and fades too fast to see any details -> system reboots -> no clone.
I then view log and see that last event recorded in clone sequence is the successful lock of partition C. (see attachment)
No error report and no chance (without a high speed camera) of seeing the form/dialogue box.
The video posted in this thread at "Wed, 2012-02-01 16:43" shows a very similar sequence (my drives are all internal and SATA)
The think that is upsetting my most is the fact that I used the same procedure a couple of months ago to clone a 64GB SSD to the 12GB SSD with no problems at all, and have been blessing Acronis ever since as money well spent
Best regards
Jeff.

Jeffrey,
Have you tried cloning using the recovery CD? When cloning the OS drive it better to use the recovery CD as this prevents Windows from locking files and disks before the Linux reboot, this would also allow a greater chance in finding out what the error message is.
Whilst the AHCI could be the problem if Linux is lacking the driver for your setup, this would seem less likely as you have been able to clone this mahcine before. Was it with 2013 or 2012? I think it might be your new SSD that it is having a problem with, things to try.
1. Use the 'add New Disk function to initialise the Samsung SSD (using the recovery CD).
2. Remove disk 1 and or 2 data connectors temporarily and see if that makes a difference.
3. Change the Sata port that new SSD is connected to.
