Unable to create a working bootable CD
I decided to buy TIH 2013 and the Plus Pack. I am unable to create a bootable CD to work on my Sony Vaio. If I used the ISO downloadable from my account on the website and run it while my Vaio is in UEFI mode, I get the runtime error 'Failed to detect graphic output mode'. I would have thought this issue would have been sorted out by now.
I've also tried to create an ISO using WinPE ISO builder from the start menu but this one does not get picked up on booting at all.
Are Acronis ever going to solve this issue?

Colin B wrote:I imagine the UEFI and Secure Boot problem will be resolved in the next update whenever that is. In the meantime have you tried disabling Secure Boot and switching UEFI to Legacy mode, that should allow the CD to boot the PC. If that still doesn't work then there may be some driver problems with Linux and the Vaio, but that will depend on exactly what does or does not happen when you attempt to boot including any error messages.
Which version of WAIK/ADK are you using?
WAIK/ADK automatically make a CD bootable from the Plus Pack. When you say start menu do you mean Windows Start Menu or the True Image menu? To make the PE version of the recovery CD you need to start the acronis Media Builder and select Windows PE as the type of environment you want to make.

Thanks for the reply.
The one I downloaded from the website works in Legacy mode although I do not understand why I should have to keep switching modes to use the Acronis CD. I have also been using Paragon Hard Disk Manager and their CD has no problem booting in UEFI mode.
I have v3.0 of the AIK. I am not sure what you mean by ADK. I used the Acronis WinPE ISO Builder that shows up in the Windows start menu and followed what it said in the help file. This one is not bootable at all.
Thanks again.

Norman,
ADK is the Windows 8 version of WAIK also known as PE 4.0.
As I said in my reply, to have the Cd bootable you need to make the PE based CD from within the Acronis Media Builder as WAIK itself doesn't make the CDs bootable.
So, start the Media Builder, if the Plus Pack has installed correctly, where the wizard asks if you want to make a CD or ISO there should also be a choice to use WinPe 2 or 3. Select WinPe 3 and the media builder will automatically mount the WAIK wim file, import the True Image settings, dismount the wim file and then burn the resulting ISO to a CD.
At the moment True Image doesn't recognise WinPe 4.0 without some fiddling, so stick with the version you are using.

Well I tried following the instructions at http://forum.acronis.com/forum/35238 very carefully but the CD I created at the end of it all is still not bootable. I may have to give up and keep switching between UEFI and Legacy modes but it is very disappointing Acronis cannot come up with a working simple solution when the competition don't have that problem.

Norman,
You appear to be making things more difficult than you need.
1. Those instructions you reference are for WinPE 4, you stated in post #2 you are using WinPE 3.0.
2. If WAIK has installed properly the Acronis Media Builder will find it automatically. The steps in James F instructions are solely for Windows 8 and using WinPE 4.0 as the media builder doesn't recongise ADK installations as yet.
3. You only need to run the Acronis Media Builder and select WinPE option and the media builder will do everything else for you.
4. You might want to check that the Plus Pack has installed itself correctly, so reinstall the PP.
5. Double check your PC is set to boot from CD
6. Check the instructions in the True Image 2013 User Guide page 177 section 8.2.3 onwards. If having followed these instructions you are still having a problem, please post some snipshots of what you see on the screen as you progress through the media builder steps.

Thanks, Colin. I've done everything you've said but the resulting CD is not bootable on my Vaio. No errors along the way but when I try to boot from it, my computer just goes to Windows 8. No other CDs seem to have this problem.
And now I have an even bigger problem. Tried to restore from my first backup. Opened TIH from Windows and set the restore but when it went to restart the computer to carry out the operation, it just went back into Windows and did nothing. Tried it twice but I cannot restore from Windows.
All I could do was use my basic Acronis CD, switching first to Legacy mode, do the restore, then switch back to UEFI to boot back into Windows. This is really unsatisfactory. Paragon HDM never has these problems so why does TIH?

If you can't boot from the recovery CD, the Windows version won't be able to restore a system drive either as it reboots into a Linux environment.
Are you able to check the recovery CD on a non Sony PC, so that we can establish if it is a hardware recognition problem or something very wrong with the media builder operation?
Is there any reason why you haven't made and tried a standard Linux based recovery CD?
With UEFI set to legacy (I'm not sure but this might not be necessary if using ADK/WinPE 4.0) and Secure Boot disabled, what booting order and priority is your boot sequence set at?
If you are still within your 30 day support period I would raise a support ticket just in case there is some sort of incompatibility with Sony laptops.

Tried it on another Sony Vaio running Windows 7 and with an MBR disk and it seemed fine. So the issue may be to do with this being a GPT disk and/or the OS being Windows 8. As you suggest, I will try and raise a support ticket. Thanks again.
