Issue started last night: Failed to prepare data stream. Check whether the source and target partitions exist
I've been running these backups every Sunday evening for months now without any incident and all of a sudden last night it kept erroring out and I kept retrying before finally going to bed. Here's the details in the event log for Acronis:
Event Details: Failed to prepare data stream. Check whether the source and target partitions exist.
Error Code: More information about this error and solutions may be available online in the Acronis Knowledge Base.

I have not been able to find a successful solution and considering absolutely nothing has changed on my system, it doesn't seem likely anything affected it. Not even a windows update occurred.
I know the drive is fine. I can browse to it. I can also browse the backups.
I am running Windows 7 64-bit. This is an HP Intel i7 laptop.
Has anyone run across this and had any success in figuring out why it occurred?
Thanks in advance.

Ok, I believe I resolved the issue.
For some really odd reason, Acronis had made a new folder under the primary folder it had been backing up to called "My Backups" which was empty and did not contained the incremental backups, hence causing the failure. I was unable to get it to save when I editted the settings to change the path to the correct path. So I rebooted. Then I went back it and changed the path and this time it let me save it. I started the backup and now it's running.
I will report back and let you know if it finishes.
I would really like to know what caused this phenomenon? I specifically set this up to use a mapped drive to avoid any issues and it had worked all the way up until now.

Scratch that. Not even 5 minutes in I get an "Error occurred do you want to change the backup location or retry?"
What the hell is going on?!? NOTHING CHANGED!! GRRR

Ok Tried two things. I have a gigabit switch in between my laptop and router. I took it out of the equation and am now directly attached to the router.
That didn't work.
I then started realizing the connectivity to the drive (by the way, the drive is attached to the router, which is a netgear router) itself was acting funky.
I unplugged the router and the drive for over a minute and plugged them back up. Waited for the drive to come back online and the speed of browsing the drive returned to normal.
Started up the Acronis backup and this time around it actually started backing up and is progressing.
Will post an update whether it passed or failed. It's estimated time is an hour, since its incremental.

Seemed have to did the trick rebooting the router and the USB drive. Backup finished successfully.
