Unknown software after installation
An Acronis representative installed 2013 yesterday because of problems with my current configuration. I haven't backed up yet but just poking around and looking at a directory where the icon is stored, there is a strange file, SpywareTerminatorSetup.exe. I note that the copyright is held by 'Crawler.com'. Could that file be a part of a bundled package containing Acronis? I've heard of crawlers and not much has been flattering. It doesn't appear in my "Uninstall Programs" list, either.
So, I'm tempted to just delete the shortcut icon but don't know what ramifications that might have. Anyone have any experience with that? Thank you,
Mike

Hi Forum Star, The icon was in a folder on my screen which contains shortcuts...to this Forum now, Mozbackup, "C:\" and other shortcuts. The icon (shortcut) to SpywareTerminatorSetup.exe, was just "there" when I looked this morning. There is no directory path... it is a .exe file and I sure don't want to run an unknown executable. And whereas the other shortcuts are 1 and 2KB, this one is 782 KB. (Well yeah, it's a program.)
Disk? No, there is no disk. I bought 2013 online. I couldn't get Acronis 10 uninstalled properly so that I could install 13 so I let an Acronis software tech take control of my computer to do the job. He installed 2013, too. I have performed a system-wide search and there were no "SpywareTerminator" occurrences. So, I don't know where it came from.
Just to say - now that you've read all that'- ... I checked google for "Spyware Terminator" and there is a nice review from cnet at download.cnet.com/Spyware-Terminator-2012/3000-8022_4-10468541.html. There is also a 'Publisher's Description", the publisher being Crawler. I don't know what to think about it all. Cnet makes me feel warm and fuzzy about it, the name 'crawler' is anything but warm and fuzzy, and the uninvited appearance on my computer is puzzling if not frightening. Again, I'm leaning toward deleting it unless it's really supposed to be there.
This was a long post but thanks for bearing with me. Hope it makes sense to you and I also thank you for your continued assistance.

It certainly is not part of a standard 2013 install package as Dev-Anon says.
Personally as you don't know how it has come to be on your PC, I would shift delete the file and then empty your user temp folder and the all users temp folder, plus, if you have Windows Restore points enabled I would give thought to deleting all the restore points you currently have, then run your AV software on a deep system scan.

Thank you Colin,
I'll do exactly that. Sure makes me wonder how it could have been placed but The important thing now is to get rid of it.
Thank you very much,
Mike
