First place to look is at the file system of the target disk. If the target disk has a file system which is FAT32, windows will split the single backup file into 4 GB pieces. If your target disk is FAT32, it can be converted to a NTFS file system. Use a Google search for
Converting FAT32 to NTFS.

Another possibility (but remote) is that user set specific options in the "archive splitting" option. Automatic mode is the correct setting for within the "archive splitting" option when you do NOT want the backup file to be split into specific sizes.

Greetings,
There are usually two reasons for this.

Either you have selected Archive Splitting under the Back Up options... or you have selected a destination with file size limitations based on the that disk's formatting.... such as FAT32.

Back ups saved to CD or DVD is obvious.

What size are your individual .tib files? 4GB?.... with the last being smaller?
