.zip backup question

Thread needs solution

I would like to backup the data section of my computer in the .zip format so that I could restore it even if I did not have Acronis TI 11 available to restore. The data section is about 40 gb.

Acronis TI 11 does not give me the dropdown to chose .zip file format.

Is this because the backup is too big to do in .zip. The User Guide seems to indicate that the maximum is 4gb, but could this be right?

John,

Just stumbled onto your query and I might be able to help you with it in the event you have not already obtained the answers . Let me preface my remarks by stating that I will give you insight into your situation based on TI version 2010.

The answer to the procedure to chose the .zip format instead of the native .tib format is found in the "Archive location" dialog area of the "Backup Wizard". By clicking the "Browse" button to the right of the "Backup location:" list box, you will be taken to the "Browse for Location" box at the bottom of which, under the "File name:" list box, you will find a list box titled ""Files of type:" where you can choose the .zip format from the drop down menu.

As far as the maximum size for the .zip file, that is a function of the file system that is used on the backup media (hard drive, flash drive, etc.). If the file system is FAT32, then the maximum size of the .zip file is limited to 4GB. However, TI will make as many files of the maximum size as is needed to "zip" the data to be archived. That is to say, with a 40GB data archive, TI will make 10 - 4GB files that together make up the 40GB archive. If you have a NTFS file system on the backup media, then TI will make a 40 GB ".zip" file (just be sure that whatever .zip archive program that you use to read .zip files has the capability to read that large a file).

Hope this helps.

Nice bump for a very old post :-)
