Can't delete previous versions

Thread needs solution

ATI Home 2012

I'm trying to increase capacity on my source drive since ATI says that there's insufficient space for backups. I click on Backup.../Explore and Recover and select an incremental backup that is about 655GB. The process to delete the version appears to start okay, but after 30 minutes or so I get an error "the disc is full" and then "an unknown error has occurred."

I've tried to delete later (smaller) backups and have restarted ATI and continue to get the errors. I'm following the instructions in section 3.10 of the product documentation.

Here are a couple links of interest. You are using the correct screen for deletions.
Can you tell us more about the type of files you have in your storage folder? Are these all inc based on one full?

The files in the inc backup are nothing unusual. Lots of video related stuff. There are a couple of very large .AVI video files - maybe 35 GB each if that makes a difference. Are there some files that are problematic? My OS is Vista if that makes a difference.

Yes - these are all inc based on one full. After my first try to delete six incs or so, I've been working only with the most recent two in case the most recent has some sort of problem (like only being partially archived).

I haven't tried using Win Explorer to deoete files to regain capacity because of warnings throughout the documentation. Should I do that to free up some space and then let Acronis deal with it? I'm not particularly concerned about losing data in the recent archived backups, I just need to get the software working again so that I can resume creating archives in case I do need one. I'm reluctant to do so, but if needed I'll reformat the target drive and reinstall Acronis. Is there some less drastic steps to try? The current backup hardware/software is useless as it now stands.

I appreciate your help.

Lee,

As I indicated in your other post, at some point you will need to start over with a different set of backup scheme options.

If you want to continue with the inc type backup, then use the illustration 11-Inc that I suggested. or, if you want to use dff, then use 11-Dif as the illustration.

The problem got out of hand and the only fix I see is to start over. You could try deleting a bunch of new files but the same full disk issue would reappear as it has now. Hence, I see the only fix is to start over with new options. You could point the new backup task to a new sub-folder so the you could possibly delay all the deletion until after a new full is created--if space would permit.

As noted in the links, in order to be able to restore or validate a backup of this type, starting with the full, each orignal inc must exist otherwise the chain is broken and all newer inc from that point forward are non-usable. Newest inc backward can be deleted but not any of the older inc if you wish to retain the restoreability of the chain.

I do suggest you make more frequent full backups so you have a lot fewer inc that are dependant on the full.

Keep one procedure in mind. When it is time for the program to create a new full backup, it will first create the replacment and then do the deletion afterwards. This procedure causes the program to need additional space for 1 full backup temporarily and this must be part of your space planning on how best to use your 2 TB storage disk.

Thanks Grover. I did as you suggest and followed the 11 inc guide. After reformatting the target drive I backed up my boot drive overnight and everything appears to be working okay. I have my storage drive backing up now.

For some reason I thought that Acronis default was to delete the oldest incremental backup when the target disc got full. Your tutorial was helpful.

Hi Lee,

yes, that is basically what is supposed to happen in that the program is supposed to merge your new incs into the base--except for many, it seems to encounter problems. That is why my suggetion is to not use consolidatiion of merging of data but a straight forward delete and replace as consolidation can also be very time consuming.

Good luck and avoid any editing of tasks.
