Checking if a made Backup will work when needed

Thread needs solution

Hi,
So I made 2 backups (one with my bought 2012 ATI including plus pack), one made by the trail version of 2013.

I'd like to see if my backups will work as intented when I need them.
So I was thinking about restoring it on an external HDD (the OS of the backups is windows xp (SP3)

Then I would boot my windows vista laptop from that external drive in order to see if all works well.

At least, that's the theory. Practicly I'm not really sure this method will work, so I could use some advice on 'How do I test if my backup will work' (without having to restore it to an exual PC)

Thanx.

It is a good idea to test. Boot from the ATI2013 bootable Rescue Media. Make sure it recognizes your hardware and your backups. Validate a backup. Begin a files/folder restore and restore a couple of files to make sure it works. That will give you good confidence.

You could also do a full disk restore to an extra drive. But, no you won't be able to boot to Windows from an external USB hard drive. That is a Windows limitation, not a True Image issue.

More advice, from Grover:

Boot from At the very bare minimum, you should boot into the TI Rescue CD and perform a backup directing its storage to whatever device you plan to use if you need to recover. You need to know that the CD functions for your equipment.

While still booted from the CD, perform a validation on any or all your backups so you know that TI will not reject any of these backups. You need to know that the backups created within Windows will validate and that they will restore.

It is also recommended that you perform some types of restores to make sure your recovery plan is working. There has been too many postings where the backups were made but never really tested to see if the plan worked. For many, this failure to test turned into a data disaster. Testing is safest when done to a spare hard drive.
