Restore a TIH2013 Backup to a larger disk

Thread needs solution

I am planning to replace my laptop hard drive with a larger hard drive. I read Grover's manual for restoring a TIH2013 backup to a larger disk and I have one question: In the manual he emphasizes to install the new hard drive to the same position in the computer and use the same cable and connector that was used for the original drive. The drive I am trying to replace is in a laptop. I bought an USB enclosure for the new hard drive and that's how I plan to have it connected to the laptop during the restore process. Is this his recommendation or should I attach the new hard drive to where the original drive is, and have the original drive in the USB enclosure? My laptop is a Sony VGN-FW465 and I am running Windows 8 64 bit O/S.

Thanks

Grover is right. It's best to remove the existing drive, install the new drive, and restore the backup.

Where is the backup located? Normally I would restore a backup image from an external HD.

Have you booted from the ATI 2013 bootable Rescue Media to ensure that it recognizes your hardware and can restore? There are specific issues and procedures for Sony laptops and Windows 8.

I have the backup located on an external USB drive. I have not booted from the ATI 2013 bootable Rescue Media yet.

Hopefully, there will be another user who can respond to your post about your specific model but in the meantime, we really need to know whether you can boot your compouter without making any adjustments to the BIOS menu. You may or may not have to enable or disable a couple bios settings in order to boot into TrueImage..

It would also be helpful to know if your old disk is the new GPF partition type.
Have you looked inside the Windows Disk Management to see how your current partitions are arranged?
Also use the DISKPART command options to also look at how your partitions are listed.

I don't have Sony nor Windows 8 nor GPF partitions, so unable to help. My guides are based on MBR type partitions and replicating GPF partitons may need to be different.

The old disk unit is a MBR partition. I did not need to make any changes to the BIOS. I went ahead and followed your procedure and everything went very smooth and I was able to restore my TIH image to the new larger hard drive. Thanks for your help
