Changing to a new SSD drive

I am changing the hard drive in my old laptop to a new SSD drive. I backed up the entire disk using Acronis 2013 to an external USB drive. I removed the old hard drive and installed the new SSD (unformatted) into the laptop and booted from the Acronis recovery CD. When I attempt to restore, Acronis does no see my new drive. Does the new drive have to be formatted? Any help will be appreciated.
