TIH 2012 - Can't mount archive
Hi,
I'm unable to mount an archive either in Acronis TIH or using the shell extension. I have validated the archive and it is valid and can open the archive.
The mounted volume appears and can be accessed while the 'assigning letters to partitions...' is running but then disappear when the error message appears 'Can't assign drive letter...". I've tried using different drive letters and to mount in read-write mode.
This is a new install of Win7 x64.
Please help!
Paul

The archive is on my backup hard drive.
I've tried a repair install and reboot and an uninstall and reinstall...

Paul,
Are you able to explore an image?
If possible are you able to either copy or make a disk image to your internal drive and see if that makes any difference, I don't think it will though.
You are trying to mount a disk or partition image not a files and folders one (just checking :) )?
I once had a similar problem with ABR11 which turned out to be due to an incorrect registry entry not recognising Acronis agent. Problem is TIH doesn't use the MMS agent, so I'm not sure how to solve your problem.
I suggest raising a support ticket with Acronis.

Hi Colin,
I'm able to explore the image and it is a partition that I am trying to mount.
Will raise a support ticket...
thanks for your assistance.

I've just had a thought, Paul.
Check in MSCONFIG under the startup tab and see if you have a TimeounterMonitor.exe entry and if you do that it is ticked to run at startup, then check the file is actually installed at the location specified in MSCONFIG.

Hi,
I have TrueImageMonitor.exe in startup? Couldn't find a TimeounterMonitor.exe on my pc

Paul,
Sorry misled you, I double checked my trial installation and saw the entry, but now realise this belongs to an uninstalled copy of ABR11.

I'm not sure what solved the problem for me.
This was a clean W7 x64 install and I had installed additional software in the meantime. I've noticed that a number of C++ Redistributable packages had been installed but have no idea if this is only co-incidental.
I'm sorry that I can be more specific.
regards

Also unable to mount image using Acronis 2012. Image created using desktop app, not standalone cd. Image created on USB attached portable HD. Running Vista, I get "mounting" message, but system freezes after that, only solution is to pull the plug. Also, I don't see "mount" when I right-click on my .tib file (maybe I'm remembering Acronis 11?)
My attempt to mount is through the application, tools/utilities.
Any suggestions?
Dave

Have you tried to mount the archive in read-only mode? in read-write mode? Does it make any difference?
Some general troubleshooting here.

Update:
Pat L., thanks for the suggestions.
Per my conversation with support, I installed the latest snapAPI drivers from the zip file provided to me.
Then:
1. Copied a 3-gig partition from USB portable drive to hard drive, mounted from HD, - it mounted quickly.
2. Mounted the same 3-gig partition from USB portable drive, took about 3 minutes to "mount successfully." (Connection via USB 2.0)
3. Mounted a 48-gig partition from the USB portable drive. It took 15 minutes to mount successfully.
4. Attempted to mount a 100-gig partition from USB portable drive. The attempt started 45 minutes ago, and the "assigning drive letters to partition" window is still showing (on my other computer.)
I've yet to try to mount in write mode, or to run the validate tool. However, I'm retired, so I have time to do those things later...

Dave,
As for the right click mount command command, look for the archive option and the mount command is inside that option.
Also, when mounting, it also will make things speedier and easier if you mount only the partitions you really need to use. There is no need to mount a system reserve or vendor partition and these can be excluded from the mount command before you execute the instruction to mount.

I guess I should be "replying", rather than posting new comments? Anyhow, here's my final update, and I hope others will have more success in solving the problem. I moved my license to my laptop, which also is running Vista 32. After installing the SnapAPI drivers obtained from support, I was able to mount the image that I created on my desktop machine. I don't know why the function doesn't work on that particular image on my desktop, but I've spent enough of my time (and other's time) on this - so, thanks to all!

Where can I get hold of the updated SnapAPI drivers please?

First if you have downloaded and installed build 6131 check to see what build your Snapman and VDS drivers are - if they report build 640 and build 61 respectively, then I suspect they are up to date.
The link is here

I have the same problem. I could mount my archives with no problem with ATIH 2011 but now I've update to 2012 I keep getting the message "Cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive."
I can explore the archive but not mount it using any of the tools.
I have moved the archive from D: to E: to H: to no effect.
I have re-installed Snapman and VDS drivers as suggested also without any effect.
Can you advise further solutions? I need some files from the backup immediately.
regards, G

The only immediate solution toget you going is to run the recovery CD and access the files you need from there.

You can try.
When you perform the mount procedure, the user has the option to only mount specific partitions and to choose their intended drive letter.
Designate only the one partition to be mounted and choose a letter toward the end of the alphabet.

Thank you for your comment, there is only one partition and I have tried z: with no result. Acronis tried for an hour to get it to work via Team viewer with mixed results. It worked a couple of times but not consistently and I have left it in their hands to solve the problem. I will remove ATIH 2012 and go back to 2011 for the time being.
Thank you all for your input.

There is definitely a problem with this feature. I volunteer to help Acronis support get the right information to debug it. I can reproduce the problem 100% of the time on my Vista desktop. My Vista laptop, on which the product is currently installed, allows the mount to occur after about 2-3 minutes, much slower than my previous version.

Seems quite a few people are having this problem and I wonder how many more would experience it if they tried mounting an image. After all it would be a small percentage of ATIH 2012 users that would have tried to do this.
I think Acronis need to get moving on a fix. We've paid for a product that is inferior to the previous version.

One more here. I'm a new user of ATIH 2012 and am unable to mount the backup on my USB connected drive. I get the "cannot assign drive letter" error message. However, as long as I can explore the image and restore individual files, I'm satisfied for now. I also want to be able to use the backup to restore my entire hard drive if necessary, but I am assuming that the "mount" problem does not imply that I will not be able to use the backup to restore the whole drive. I guess I need to buy another hard drive ti test this.

Registered on the forum just so I could add my name to the list!
Same error: "Can't assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive."
Specs: ATIH 2012 Build 6131
Windows 7 Pro x64
.TIB files are "valid" after running Acronis validation tool
I can hear Windows notification (ding) when its trying to "assign letter to partition". Even Device Manager lists "Acronis Virtual HDD" but after about 1-2 minutes it will come back with the error.

Frommy,
Retry but when askiing TI to assign the drive letters, only ask them to assign a drive letter to the drive C backup. Do NOT attempt to assign letters to partitions which do not normally have letters.
When you look in the Device Manager, there should NOT be an ! mark on any of the Acronis items.

Already tried that (I've seen you reference that in multiple posts). See attached screenshots...
I honestly think this is a bug with the software that needs to be addressed. Multiple people are having the same issue.

I did manage to mount the backup on a computer running XP Home, which means that the backup is OK. I agree that there seems to be a problem with Win 7 x64 that should be addressed.

Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for your comments.
We would really like to help you resolve the issue with mounting backups.
I would really appreciate if you could take a look at this KB article - Acronis True Image Cannot Mount Backup Archive and if the solution section does not help resolve the issue, contact me via a private message so that I can ask you for additional diagnostic information.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.

First, The KB article does NOT say it applies to ATIH 2012. Second, I'm not sure what it means when the article says: "If there is any encryption or security software, try temporarily disabling it, and see if this resolves the issue." I have Truecrypt installed but there are no file containers mounted as virtual drives. Is this an issue? (It was not when I mounted the backup on my Win XP Home system as a test.) I have AV G anti-virus installed and running. Is this a potential issue? (The XP test system has Microsoft anti-virus installed and running.)
IMHO, if ATIH has a problem with Truecrypt or anti-virus programs under Windows 7 x64, then this should be counted as a bug. These are not a problem with earlier versions of Windows.

I have the exact same problem and support has been unable to help me - just keeps asking me to do more, without any solution. My problem is exactly as posted above:
Same error: "Can't assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive."
Specs: ATIH 2012 Build 6131
Windows 7 Pro x64
.TIB files are "valid" after running Acronis validation tool
I can hear Windows notification (ding) when its trying to "assign letter to partition". Even Device Manager lists "Acronis Virtual HDD" but after about 1-2 minutes it will come back with the error.

Frank,
Have you tried updating to the latest build (6154) to see if that solves the problem?
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können
I had a similar problem with ESet Virus software. My Eset offered an option to turn off the eSet for a few minutes. Once I turned it off temporarily, I was able to mount the backups. Also, use the option to assign only the single drive letter. Do not try to mount an unlettered partition.

I just wanted to post an update. I upgraded my Acronis TIH 2012 to the latest build and the problem seems to be fixed for me. It looks like it may have been a bug in the software.
Verison is: Acronis True Image Home 2012, Update 2 (build 7119)
Can anyone else who had this problem confirm they are working as well?

Hello
have had same problem with older images (atih11 or atih10 or ...). Newer images could mounting, older not.
Checkmark 'Mount the partitions in the read-write mode' solve the problem for me; older image could mount then.
Acronis True Image Home 2012, Update 2 (build 7119)
Win7 Prof. 64bit
Got the ERROR:
"Die Zuweisung des Laufwerksbuchstaben zu einer Partition des Backup-Archivs ist fehlgeschlagen."

If more than 1 partition is being mounted, try mounting only the single partition which contains your files. Do not try to mount a non-lettered drive.

I know this is an old topic, but i have encountered exact the same problem :
The mounted volume appears and can be accessed while the 'assigning letters to partitions...' dialog is running but then disappear when the error message appears 'Can't assign drive letter...".
Tried using different drive letters and to mount in read-write mode, but no luck.
Reinstalling Acronis True Image did not fix the problem.
I also had another problem at the same time, when i connect a USB memorystick or memorycardreader.... , it always keep asking for drivers,
while this normally where installed automatic by windows buildin drivers.
I had to point each time to the location "C:\Windows\Inf" for the drivers to get installed automatic and after that,
the USB memorystick works till a reconnect the USB memorystick, and it ask again for installing drivers.
When a fix this problem, the problem with mounting of images also disappeared.
The problem was in my case 1 registry value that pointed to another location then "C:\Windows\inf" ,
this key can be found at this location in the registry :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Look in the right pane for the key named "DevicePath" , it must have a value "%SYSTEMROOT%\inf"
Good luck ;-)

DeLorean,
Some users have found they must disable their AV temporarily to perform a mount.
Best also to use the read only mode and assign only single partitions to be used.
FYI: My path in XP Pro was already correct.
