Clone Disc Problem

Thread needs solution

Hi, I have Acronis True Image 2012. I have 2 drives in my pc, a 500gb sata drive which has my OS on it and a smaller 120gb SSD. I am trying to clone the larger drive in order to move the OS and all programs etc to put on the smaller SSD. I am doing this from within windows. When trying to select the source drive, the sata 500gb drive is greyed out and I am not able to select it. Can anyone help me?

How manny space do you have left? you need atleast 380GB (maybe less because of boot partitions) free on your 500gb sata disk to fit the backup on your SSD.

If not start up cleaning until you have 380GB free. If this is not possible, only a reinstall on the ssd is possible.

What you want is copy 2 disk directly. That isnt possible.

Ive a similar problem (Revodrive X2 => backup disk (500GB => mechanical disk (because the Revodrive X2 was faulty) => Backup to Backupdisk again => Restore from Backup disk to Revodrive 3 X2 ) like you.

You need a location to copy the backup anywhere except the disk where the OS is on or where it gonna be placed later. So you need a 2nd disk (USB,SATA doesnt matter).

When you have a backup on your backup disk you can restore the backup from the backup disk to your SSD.

Hi, I'm not sure I follow you. I have 2 physical disks, one is a sata which is where the os is installed, and the second disc is a ssd. When using Acronis I want to clone the sata disk to the ssd drive but Acronis wont allow me to select the sata disk as my source drive?

I dont know if you can clone directy your OS (mechincal disk) to your SSD.

Normally you need to make an backup from your OS, which you place on your 2nd disk (backup/trash/download disk). From that, you restore to any other disk. For example your new SSD.

If i check in my Acronis True Image 2013, there isnt any clone option. Only making Backup and recovery.

But you can try disk clone programs like Symantec Ghost. I know you can do it with those. So long your controller is set for IDE or AHCI it wont be a problem. Raid wont work because of drivers.

Try performing your procedures when booted from the TI Recovery CD.

After booting from the CD,'
perform a TI "Add new disk" function on the 120 SSD and initialize as MBR.

The space on the 120 will become all unallocated in prep for the clone.
You do not indicate the version of os and any details of the source disk.
You may want to consider using the Manual mode so you can control the partition sizes.
