Advice please for EXTREMELY simple backup strategy
I would really appreciate some advice regarding very short term backing up. I am content with my full disk image backups, made monthly and weekly. I don't want to use Non Stop Backup or any external or additional software, just Acronis True Image Home 2010.
My aim is to have hourly incremental or differential backups but to keep only the last four or five at the very most. The reason is that I often experiment with files and settings and for example want to restore some files to their state two hours ago or perhaps restore the entire drive to one hour ago.
Currently I have differential backups made each hour and in quieter periods I delete all but the full backup and the last three differentials. This is fine for a while, but soon the full backup gets very old and the latest differential gets very large. Starting all over again every few days seems OK but of course I then lose the backups of the last few hours.
In summary, all I want to achieve is to be able to restore to any point in the last few hours, without having the overhead of Non Stop Backup running all the time; I found it does noticeably slow down my machine and does cause programs to freeze for a short while while it is running. It is also too frequent, backing up every five minutes.
Many thanks in advance to any expert user who can suggest a strategy that will work for me.

Thanks for the reply. I did already search but did not find. I did make the point that I don't want to use any external or additional software, so that rules out your suggestion regarding Chain2Gen and rules out using batch files.
I don't agree that I shall need lots of hourly backups. If say I am developing an excel macro I might go too far and want to roll that file back to where I know it last worked, probably before I starting mucking about. Typically this will be a couple of hours ago. In any case, as I said, I have weekly images of my entire drive should I need to go back that far. I could of course use Try and Decide but the problem with that is if I get an email while I am trying and then I decide to roll back, I lose that email or any other file that has changed legitimately during the trial.
Shopping around for more software is contray to my expressed desire not to use additional software.
I am inclined to agree with you that Acronis True Image Home 2010 is not able to provide frequently updating and recent backups, other than via Non Stop Backup which I find far too frequent. It might be nice to be able to change the default period from 5 minutes, but that's another item. However I am always optimistic that someone who reads my plea for help will have a method that fits the requirements.
