TI 2013 Restore using Flash Drive
I am able to backup using a bootable flash but can not restore using the same flash. But when I use a CD boot disk and restore the file backed up with the flash it works fine. Anything I am missing?

Are you positive that you have enabled USB boot in the BIOS?

Yes. The system boots up fine with the usb and Acronis launches and I go thru the backup process and Acronis says it backed up properly. Then I go to restore using the usb and it boots and Acronis loads as before and this time I restore using Acronis and Acronis says it restored properly, but when I try to reboot with out the usb to run the restored file it acts like there is not boot sector. So then I try using an Acronis CD boot disk and restore the file I backed up using the usb boot and every thing works. So my backup file made by the usb boot is fine but restoring with the usb, the Acornis restore will not work even though it tells me it was ok. Using the Acronis boot cd it restores fine.
Is there someting in making the usb boot flash I need to do to make it restore properly? I do the same restore procedure with the usb as I do with cd and the cd works.

So, if I understand correctly, the restore of the same image completes when you restore from the CD or from the bootable USB drive you used to do the backup, but the computer doesn't boot in the case of a restore done with the USB drive.
Are you using the same restore approach? You are selecting the same entire disk (you check at the disk level) and you restore to the same destination (sometimes the drive letters change, so make sure you restore to the disk looking at disk characteristics, not the drive letters).

The restore will not work when I use the usb boot drive but it will with the cd boot disk. The back up image is the same which was made with the usb boot drive, so the backup image is fine. I am doing the same steps using the usb or the cd when I restore. The cd works correctly the usb says it completed correctly but when I take the usb out and boot the pc it tells me there is not boot sector. Any ideas why?

Nick,
Most lkely, after restorong via the Flash and rebooting, you will need to interupt the boot and change your bios back to the normal boot disk order.
Each time I use the Flash drive or Grub4dos, I need to direct the bios to a specific disk which is the normal boot disk otherwise, it will attempt to boot from the wrong disk..

Curious. I routinely boot my laptop from a USB flash drive containing the True Image bootable media, and I never have issues booting to the internal HD afterwards. I have no need to change BIOS to use either device.

Tuttle,
My characteristics may also relate to I'm using a 10 yr old machine (Pentium 4, 2.6ghz) and commenting about my XP pro desktop. Others may differ. I just wanted to alert than verifying the boot order should be performed if it fails to boot normally.

I did change the boot order before booting the internal hard drive this time and got the same results MBR error 1. The restore of the C drive is there and Acronis tells me that the MBR restored also but I keep getting the error. It appears that it is looking for a USB drive for the operating system.
One other thing the CD restore before the proceed button list step 3 as reconfiguring the drive but the USB restore step 3 says MBR restore.
Any thoughts?

Hello All,
I encountered the same error as Nick.
Here is how to recreate the error, I used a DELL D610 laptop.
PREP PHASE
- Wipe the internal hard drive clean with a utility like DBAN by booting from CD.
- Install Windows XP from original CD, to a single NTFS partition.
- Install True Image Home 2012 with Plus Pack, apply updates to bring up to build level 7133.
- Create the TI Rescue media on a blank CD.
- Create the TI Rescue media on a blank 2GB USB stick.
BACKUP PHASE
- Plug an external USB hard drive to the laptop's USB port.
- Boot the TI software from the USB stick.
- Back up the WINDOWS XP partition to a single TIB file on the external USB drive, this is the GOLDEN image.
RESTORE with USB stick.
- Boot the TI software from the USB stick.
- Restore the WIN XP partition from TIB file on external USB hard drive.
- After restore is done, reboot the laptop, making sure to tell the BIOS to boot from internal HDD.
------> ERROR, only blank screen is displayed, CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work, only powering off the laptop works.
RESTORE with Rescue CD.
- Boot the TI software from CD.
- Restore the WIN XP partition from TIB file on external USB hard drive, exact same file as before.
- After restore is done, reboot the laptop, making sure to tell the BIOS to boot from internal HDD.
------> SUCCESS, WINDOWS XP boots normally.
I have tried the restore of the TIB file several times by booting the TI Rescue software from USB stick, the restore always complete without errors. BUT, when booting up the laptop from internal HDD after restore, I always get the blank screen.
On the other hand, if I boot the TI Rescue Media CD, and perform the restore from the SAME TIB file, the restore and booting of WIN XP works fine.
Any ideas ??
Thanks.

Keith,
A couple questions to gather more information about the procedures used.
I understand the system is XP with one partition.
1. When performing the backup, was this a partiton type backup where only drive C was checked, or was this a disk option backup where the "switch to disk mode" option was checked which enabled the disk checkbox to be checked?
2. Was target disk installed into the intended boot location connectors before the restore?
3. When selecting what was to be restored, was the disk box checked or only drive C checked?
If disk box checked, the procedure would have bypassed the display of partition parameters and would have taken you directly from the check boxes to the disk selection screen.
4. Was the "Recover Disk Signature" box checked for restore. This is located on the same screen where the disk being used as the target is selected.
5. At first boot after restore, only the single internal disk was attached?
6. What brand USB stick? The Sandisk Cruzer has been reported to cause flash drive boot problems but not restore problem

Hello Grover,
It looks like this error has been corrected in True Image 2014.
I just booted TI 2014 Rescue media from a USB stick, performed the restore from the TIB file and the WIN XP partition booted successfully.
Thanks for your help anyway.
Keith
