TI Home 2010 backup of Networked Computers "My Documents" folder - Access is Denied

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Trying to backup a networked computer's 'My Documents' folder to the external drive attached to the host. The client computer is XP SP3. The host is Win 7.

I set the drive up as a mapped drive on the host.

I'm getting the error:

{Drive}\Documents and Settings\{Name} is not available.
Access is denied

... when trying to select the folders to be backed up. (3 different users)

I used the 'Set Credentials' link at the top of the page on the 'Documents & Settings folder' (Not available on the child locked folders) as the admin (which should have access to all the user folders in My Documents), and two of the users (who are both admins) and I continue getting Access is denied errors in Acronis.

I'm stumped. How do I get access within Acronis to be able to get to these folders to be able to back them up?

Hello Keith,

I understand your question and will do my best to give you clear explanation.

First of all please make sure that your account has Administrator rights.

Windows Vista/Windows 7:

    1. Select Start.
    2. Press right mouse button over Computer and select Manage.

    3. Select Local Users and Groups → Groups → Administrators.

    4. If you can find your Windows user id from the list, you have administrator rights.

When you map a drive, it becomes mapped only under your Windows account. The Acronis product runs its tasks using the system account and so it is sometimes impossible to locate your mapped drive (especially when you are logged off).

To solve the issue please use a full UNC path (e.g. \\server\share\) instead of a mapped drive.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

I performed a reinstall of XP home and as the Owner, I am the Administraor. I used the new Acronis 11 to move all my documents back but I get an access denied message.

I read in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308419 what to do. However, I cannot:
1. Locate a Security tab for Documents (this is an NTFS drive). Under properties, there is no option to turn off "simple" file sharing but I did turn off file sharing for the documents folder to no avail.

2. I cannot do this either:
"1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab, and then click to clear the Use simple file sharing [Recommended] check box in the Advanced settings box. " because there is no clear box in the advanced settings here either.

My understanding is that I have to turn off "simple" file sharing before a security tab will be visible so that I can give myself the Administrator privileges that I should already have as the Administrator.

I also tried this method:
"Select the folder or files you want to set permissions for. To select multiple files and folders, hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard, and click each file or folder.

Right-click the selected folders and files, and then click Properties."

But no security tab shows this way either. Is there something that I might be missing to access my documents?

Thanks, Chris

ps. I also tried "To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP Professional, follow these steps: 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040" but there is no box to clear for simple file sharing.

I attached 2 jpgs to show the folder option box where this option should appear to clear "simple" file sharing.

cordially, Chris

I have consulted all 8 pages in the knowledge base for setting permissions in xp home so that I can use my Acronis restored Documents file but to no avail. Help in XP says, naturally, to click on the Security tab to set permissions. It does not say how to do this when there is no Security tab for Documents. Boy would I sure like to use my documents especially when I paid for the upgraded Acronis. Didn't we use to have customer support in the recent past?
