Will Need Help With Backup and Restoration

Thread needs solution

Hi All, I will apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge but I recently purchased TrueImage 2014. I have a wireless portable hard drive and managed to do a backup, not really sure I am doing it correctly.

I'll attempt to explain my situation:
I have a Dell Precision M4700 with a small mSATA drive (C:) and a 1 TB (D:)
I have windows 7 installed on C: and due to the SATA's small size have installed all programs on the 1 TB D: drive. I also have "my documents" stored on D: drive.

Working with Dell Tech support I found I have quite a large number of Windows 7 corrupt files and my 1 TB drive is going out.

They are sending me a windows 7 disc so I can do a fresh install on C: drive, they are also sending me a new 1 TB D: drive.

I (think) since I am doing a fresh windows 7 install on C: drive that I will have to install each program again on the new D: drive so the programs will make the appropriate entries in the registry etc and will not be able to do just an image of D: drive......?????

If that is correct what backup/imaging path should I take? I don't think an image of D: will help if I have to re-install all of the programs, but a backup of my documents etc is likely needed???

Like I said sorry for my ignorance, but I will need some help and have a lot of reading to do to try and understand all of this.

I appreciate any help and advice. I don't want to screw this up!

When you install Windows, install it on the mSATA drive, then you can consider creating a symbolic link from the programs folders to corresponding program folders on your D: drive. While many apps are correctly coded and can be installed outside of the default directories, many of them still expect the default folders to be at their default location. You can also consider creating a symlink for your C:\users folder. Google for this, and you will find ways to do this easily.
Once your system is setup, backup simultaneously your mSata disk and you D: drive (you can exclude content from that backup if you wish), to get a system backup

Thank you Pat, I will google that and see how it can help me, it looks like I will be doing all of this crazy stuff next week.

As you recently bought True Image, I recommend that you spend time learning how the program works and how best to employ it.

Check out the many user guides and tutorials in the left margin of this forum, particularly Getting Started and Grover's True Image Guides which are illustrated with step-by-step screenshots.
In particular, 29618: Grover's new backup and restore guides http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618
There's also a full on-line user manual, and a downloadable user manual.

Thanks Tuttle, I have already been through the users guide but have not read any of Grover's so that will be my next destination.
