Is it safe to update and continue using same backups?

Thread needs solution

I've been adhering to the "Grover's Tips" on setting up and using True Image, which I didn't do before and I had some issues when I needed to use a backup. Now I have backups set-up correctly and I don't make any changes or adjustments to them. If I do need to make a change, I create a new back-up.

I'm getting alerts that there is an updated version of True Image 2014, but now I'm wondering if updating will adversely affect my back-ups. If you shouldn't make changes to your back-ups, does a version update count as a change? It seems like it should. I don't want to update and continue using my back-ups as usual, only to find out that I should have created and started new ones after the update.

What's the official (or non-official) word on Acronis updates and continuing to use existing back-ups? Is it safe to do so, or better to create new ones after a software update?

As you might guess, the answer depends upon who you ask. Acronis will tell you that you can update whereas my tips say don't.

Who is right? Your guess is as good as mine. An update makes changes to your system. You may find that the update will work ok your tasks and you won't know until you try.

My rules which I practice is to start over when the build or version changes. That gives you a fresh start with no "gotcha" from the prior installation.

You can always make a clone of your backup task so the effort put forth in creating the task needs not be lost.
A clone of your backup settings still needs to be edited first before you can use it and you would need to assign a new name
to the task as well as assign a new storage folder for the new backup files.

GH32. How to clone backup task for reuse or duplication. Also, save custom tasks for reuse again.

Do make sure you have current backup and make the clones before you update--if you do decide to update.
Don't jump to 2015 until you research the change very thoroughly in the 2015 forum.

Thank-you for the information, it confirmed my thoughts. I'll play it safe and create/clone new back-ups and destination folder when and if I decide to update.
