A few questions from a new user.
Hi, I'm Richard with thePCdoctor.
I am in charge of evaluating backup software for my company and a few clients. So far, we are liking what we see and find this to be quite an interesting product.
For general information, our network is as follow:
1) Win2K3 Domain Controller - we use anothe product for this server,
2) 11 Windows XP WS. Each WS is about 14 to 16GB in size - currently using Genie.
So with that out of the way, here are a few ways I tested backing up:
1) When performing a full backup (normal compresion), I chose to create a backup of a 16GB system using 2.2GB archive sets. The result was approximately 22GB. We read in the docs that for FTP purposes they partition size should be about 2GB. We're thinking that in some cases, we may want to use ftp. But that would be dependant on the answer to question 2 belows,
2) I then created a Full backup using HIGH compression, the result was approximately 10GB - I like this.
3) Also created a backup using DVD size partions and actually did a restore (OK, got a little excited here...). The whole process (backup, burn and restore) was about 1.25 hours - very impressive!
So, my questions are:
1) Why is the partitioned backups 22 GB in step 1 above? I understand that they would be a little larger due to over head and such, but I'm confused as to why a 6GB difference,
2) According to the docs, if one is intending on using FTP, the partition size(s) should be limited to about 2G. So if one were to use FTP to restore the backup I created in item 2 above, would it work?
Thanks in advance for any information,
Richard

Thanks for the reply Alexander, I appologize for the tardy reply, I actually forgot about this post and was investigating on my own. Please see my comments below:
1) Build No: 5.055,
2) Yes, I ran a restore on the files via FTP even tho the backed up files were larger than 2GB. For safety sake (and to be in compliance with your recommendations), I'll make sure that we adhere to the 2gb size,
3) When I back up to a local drive (Drive E: in this case, 500 GB) the size was smaller than that stored on the FTP server. I reran the backup again, and the backup set totalled 22GB (about...).
Confused as to why backing up to the FTP server is so large. Also, we backed up using the network to a mapped drive on adifferent server. Again, the size was around 22 GB.
Another piece of intel for you, the server that we are experimenting with the back up process are Windows 2000K (FTP) and Windows 2003 (File n Print only).
So my next step is to do a backup to one of my Linux boxes in my home office.
WIll advise,
One other question for you (you opened the door... :)). For a small business (say about 5 to 10 workstations), would you recommend Acronis Home or Worstation? They both seem to provide the features and abilities we would be looking for, for our clients.
Thanks agian.
ps: nothing is a show stopper here, as we are still evaluating and playing. So when time permits is fine.
