Restore backup to virtual server

Thread needs solution

Hello,
I'm trying to restore a 2 disk (600gb and 3tb) full disk backup to vmware,
There seems to be a 2TB limitation for the disk size.
What options do I have to fix this? (Quite urgently please)!

Hi Brian,

The first option is to ensure that your datastore created in vSphere supports .vmdk larger than 2TB - this is possible with vSphere 5.5 or higher only. Note that the older datastores even formatted into VMFS-5 may still have this limit applied which depends on block size - you can check it in the datastore properties in vSphere client. See http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&doc… for more details on 2TB limit.

Another option is to resize the 3TB disk down to 2TB during recovery (assuming that the data on 3TB disk is less than 2TB), i.e. create a new VM with 2TB disks during recovery to vSphere (when you restore backup as new VM you can adjust the disk sizes in Acronis options on the recovery sheet).

Third option (I'd not recommended it though due to possible backup/restore problems in future) is to create a new VM with 1x600GB + 2x2TB disks, then install fresh copy of Windows onto this machine, then convert the 2x2TB disks to dynamic ones and create 1x4TB spanned dynamic volume on this machine. After that you can either perform recovery using Acronis bootable media or install Acronis Agent inside the VM and restore volumes onto the pre-created dynamic ones.

Thank you.
