[SUGGESTION] Archive files should not archive recent PST / OST files

Thread needs solution

ATIH 2016 b5518

Now that the archive files feature is functional I've tried it out eagerly.

One thing I noticed is that this feature should not archive PST / (respectively OST) files. This will cause to compromise the functionality of an existing Outlook profile as the user would get prompted for missing PST files. PST files does not only contain mails but also some settings (rules, subfolders etc) that would fail to work after a PST file recreation.

Please exclude to archive PST files automatically in a next release moreover when the timestamp is recent so ATIH 2016 should assume that the files are being used.

Hi Karl,
it's more of enhancement request than an actual issue. .pst files won't be archived until you select them and confirm that they should be archived.
However, it is a good idea to exclude the by default. I'll share your request with development.
Thank you very much!

Hi Anna, thank you very much for sharing it and your understanding.

Hello Karl,

as you are using Acronis Archive for some time now, do you have any other suggestions/comments/concerns about that feature?

How often do you use it?  What do you find useful, what would you improve?

Hello Ulyana,

to be honest I haven't used the feature very often after the BETA.

The feature does only allow a cloud based backup, and this is someting that I never tested extensively, most of all because it is not very practical even with a 6 Mbit Upload speed, that I have.

As for suggestions:

I have copied a PST file to the desktop just to double-check if anything has already changed since 5518. Currently the feature would still delete PST files

Suggestions:

- consider to exclude PST / OST files, at least show a solid warning when a user selects them.

- allow file extension or name filters

- please check if the tool would consider use the standard storage paths (more easily adjustable since Windows 10 > refer screenshots)

when the user checks the "user base folder" which is the default action.

- it would be nice if the tool would also allow to clean up files to an external device like USB stick, HDD or a network target. on the first look it may not make sense because we have the seperate backup and restore option but if a user want to keep its backup small and seperate store older / large files, this would help to minimize backup times. Hope you get my point.

Have a good day!
