Creating a Universal Restore

Thread needs solution

I may be a bit dense but after reading and going through the Universal Restore I'm completely baffeled at setting it up properly. My intent is to replicate an older computer's system on a much newer computer. They actually have the same OS (Win 7 Pro 64) but very different hardware. My hope is to transfer the programs and settings over to minimize the work of getting everything the same. They both have similar hardware and drive orientations.

Is this possible and if so is there an easy to understand step by step example to follow? The manual leaves me scratching my head. To be honest even though I make weekly full backups of my systems I have yet had to try using them to restore any computer. Lucky I guess. This however is an observatory control telescope system and the programs are many as is the hardware, added serial cards, COM port assignments, and so on. I'd really like to try to do this if possible to save days of work starting from scratch.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Please see KB document: 56637: Acronis True Image 2016: Restoring to Dissimilar Hardware with Acronis Universal Restore which provides a lot of detail on the process plus includes a video tutorial.

I would recommend making a full system backup of both of your computer systems to an external disk drive <<before>> starting on this process, so that you have a means of recovery should it be needed.

See also, post: 117004: Great Acronis "How-To" videos and other Acronis Resources which has other helpful resources that can help in your understanding of the process needed here.

One further KB document: 19296: Acronis Products Cannot Be Used to Transfer Applications to Different System or Upgrade OS which re-enforces the way in which ATIH can be used / not used.

In principle, the process for using AUR is as follows:

  1. Create Acronis bootable Rescue Media and Universal Restore media - these can both be included in the standard Linux based media but must be created separately if the Windows PE media is used.
  2. Backup your old Windows 7 computer system to external drive media.
  3. Boot your new Windows 7 computer system from the Acronis Rescue Media with your external drive connected.
  4. Restore the backup of your old computer to the new computer.
  5. Shutdown the new computer, disconnect the external drive and remove the Rescue Media.
  6. Boot the new computer using the Universal Restore media to generalise the restored OS.
  7. Restart the computer and allow to boot into Windows 7 and detect any new devices / drivers normally.
Note: if some devices are not detected then you can apply device drivers for these from within Windows.

Thanks Steve.

I did find some online videos on YouTube but got caught up in other pressing events and just getting back to this project. Goal now is to get the system transferred and tested, then if sucessful, upgrade to Windows 10 and see how the observatory equipment works. New OS's always present challanges for older equipment and astronomy equipment is very slow in embracing the newer technology hence the serial connections.
