Drive is not ready

Thread needs solution

When performing the first backup in an incremental scheme the backup fails between a couple minutes into to about 20 mins. I'm prompted with a box stating that "The drive is not ready" and to "specify another location" by choosing browse, ignore or cancel. Unfortunately browsing to the source location continues to bring up the same error as does ignoring. Looking at the log it appears to be a very specific error :

  • The drive is not ready. (0x4000B)
  • function = "WriteFileNoCache"
  • Tag = 0x7CEB2CDC9FB121D3
  • The device is not ready (0xFFF0) code = 80070015)

Looking at the Windows event log under System this warning appears consistently after each backup attempt:

  • The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.
  • Event ID: 57
  • Source: Ntfs

Below are some system details (I also attached the Acronis System Report should it provide more information)

  • The source drive are a Western Digital 1TB hard drive (WD1001FALS-00J7B0) and a Seagate 500GB hard drive (ST3500418AS).
  • The backup location is a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3TB (I recently had this hard drive replaced because of a hardware failure)
  • Windows 7 64-bit

There was nothing in the knowledge base for this specific error and the suggest fix for usb hard drive did not apply in this case since Quick Removal was alright checked.

Has anyone run into an issue similar to this or has any suggestions where I could start eliminating hardware or OS faults before I purchase a PPI.

Is the GoFlex have its own power source or does it get its power from the usb cable?

One place I would check would be the Control Panel/Power options and make sure the setting for the usb connections is always on.

It does have its own power source.

Per your suggestion I did go into the Power Options and changed the "USB selective suspend setting" to Disabled.

No dice however, still fails with the same error.

More info though: It seems like its failing while trying to lock the partition. Is there a admin rights thing that could be at play? The UAC confirmation appears every time so that being the issue would surprise me.

Hello HeadNodShy, and Grover!

Grover, thanks a lot for help.

HeadNodShy, usually this error occurs when there are some issues with the snapapi drivers (the ones that are responsible for snapshot creation, and locking the thread). There's not universal case, thus there's no common solution.

But we have most of the resolutions listed here. Please follow the instructions, and let us know the results.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

Windows 10 clean install operational for some months

when attempting a backup Acronis will write a few megabytes of data on the destination drive then state"drive not ready"

drive will allow files to be loaded or transferred to other drives, clearly it is ready

The storage drive is a WD 4T USB 3 that has worked well with Acronis before. Lots of space on the drive.

Have deleted and reinstalled Acronis 2016, and rebooted the computer and USB drive.

Any suggestions apprciated?

Christopher, please raise this issue as a New Topic in the Acronis True Image 2016 Forum rather than in this forum for older / obsolete Acronis products.
