Making Backing-Up easier and more frequent

Thread needs solution

Inexperienced user here....so take-it-easy.  Have made some backups with Acronis...usually "Entire PC full as I thought needed.  Have been using a usb plugin harddrive.  Generally takes about 1-1/2 hrs and approx 145GB data making a .tib file size of 106GB.  No schedule or scheme Yettttt.  But, I want one?  Have a WD MyCloud attached physically to router and can "see" IT fine with computer.  LAN is wireless to router and backing-up is slow as mollasses.  Here's where the questions start.  Can I take an existing Entire-full tib file from my OLD usb plugin and transfer it to the WD MyCloud folder...then Begin doing "Differentials" with IT as the reference??  Maybe develope a Scheme or schedule after that?

i. e. How do I get around "the slowness" of that 1st full backup on the network drive?

Robert, welcome to these user forums.

The choice as to whether you should setup a schedule for your backups is entirely up to you - if you are happy about managing your backups yourself as and when you need to make a new one, that is fine.  The decision can depend on the type of computer system involved here, i.e. I don't use a backup schedule for my laptops as these are unlikely to be available at the scheduled time due to being portable, plus may also not be connected to the designated backup drive (local or network).

Next, I would suggest reviewing whether you actually need to perform an 'Entire PC' type backup - this can include any attached drives connected to the system, including the drive you may be backing up to.  I personally would recommend doing a Disk & Partitions backup for each individual drive in your computer system.  Keeping backups separate for individual disk drives will provide for smaller backup image files, plus also be easier to recover should the need arise, rather than having to pick pieces out of a very large backup that may include multiple different disk drives and partitions.

With regard to backing up over wireless connections, this really depends on your wireless network and devices involved - it can be very slow and can also be subject to errors if the wireless signal is unstable for any reason or you have other wireless devices transferring data across the same network.  The recommendation for when transferring very large amounts of data is to use a wired connection to the router.

If you do move your full backup to the WD MyCloud backup folder, then you would need to create a new backup task if you want to use that as a base for doing further differential backups.  If your WD MyCloud drive has USB connectivity, you could connect directly to your system for the purpose of making an initial full backup image.
