I have a hard disk partitioned as follows:
C: System 30GB
D: Data 70GB
Unallocated 50GB

What I would like to do is to extend C: System to 60GB and have two additional partitions 50GB and 40GB.

Windows Xp SP3 2GB RAM, Acronis TI Home 1010

I can copy D:Data files to DVDs and remove them from the hard disk. So I am not worried loosing them.

I shall backUp System C: (Do I have to do sector by sector?). Then reformat and partition the disk as required and then back up the System C: back to new C: drive. Is this all I need to do. Will MBR be setup correctly? I assume I shall start from Acronic Bootable Rescue Disk.

Can anyone offer a better way of doing it or refer me to a document please.

Do you currently have a backup of each partition (C: & D:)?

Have you successfully restored an image before? If so, you know the process works okay.

You can use a USB drive, another internal drive, or a network share to copy the files from D: if you have space available (usually much faster than DVDs).

If you used a partitioning program (like DD) to make the changes, you wouldn't have to restore the partitions. Resizing and moving could be done. However, it's still a good idea to have a backup image just in case something goes wrong.

The backup image of C: doesn't need to be sector-by-sector. A normal image is fine. The MBR should be restored/setup correctly.

Using TI, you should just need to image C: and D:, delete the D: partition, restore the C: partition back to the drive (resizing to 60GB), restore D: back to drive (resizing to 50GB), and then create the final partition using Disk Management. You could also use the Add New Disk wizard in TI to setup the partitions before you restore.
