TI 2017 Acronis Bootable Rescue Media hangs on: "what to recover + bleeping computer

Thread needs solution

Got a new PC, Windows 10 Pro (Creator's Update) 64-bit: Intel i7-7700HQ, SANdisk SSD and Toshiba harddisk.
TrueImage 2017 build 8053 installed.

I was about to perform a restore operation using the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media on an SD card.
I selected the recovery image on an external USB 3 WD hard disk and was about to select the stage "What to recover" which hang showing an empty screen.
The PC response to input was a bleeping sound.

Eventually, I was able tor restore the image from TI 2017 in Windows and a reboot.

This issue of is course a problem, because next time I may not be able to boot into Windows and complete the image restore.

Any suggestions on how to make this work?

Cheers,

Dave

Dave, which version of the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media were you using when you saw this issue?  It sounds as if this was able to boot correctly from your description but then hung while using the ATIH application itself.  If this was the standard, linux based, rescue media, then this is also the same that is used when you do a recovery by starting from within Windows - the only difference being that Acronis creates a temporary Linux boot environment and modifies your Windows boot configuration to launch from the linux OS environment.  So in this case, the real difference is then the boot medium, internal disk drive versus using the SD card.

I haven't tried creating rescue media using SD cards so have no experience to say how reliable this method can be?  I normally use a USB memory stick, typically 16GB and this is normally the WinPE version of the rescue media that I create using the MVP Tool - Custom ATI WINPE Builder tool (link in my signature).  The advanced version of the MVP WinPE rescue media also includes a web browser, file manager and other utilities which are very useful.

Steve, Thanks again for your support.

I was using the Linux based rescue media. It seems that the medium may be an issue. I will try an USB drive as Rescue Media instead.

I was just reading about the MVP tool while you were responding. I will try this.

I will let you know if I can get this working again.

Kind Regards,

Dave

Dave, one requisite for the MVP tool is the Windows 10 ADK which you need to download / install - this is a large download but when you get the install panel, you only need the top 3 options for the WinPE components.  If needed, launch the normal Bootable Rescue Media Builder tool and select the second option for WinPE and it will automatically direct you to the ADK download site if you don't already have it installed.

A little update: I installed a Bootable Rescue Media on an USB stick instead of a SD card.

I tried to restore a partition, but it resulted in a hanging and bleeping computer.

Again, restore and restart from Windows did work.

I am now trying to go for a WINPE Rescue Media.

Cheers,

Dave

Did the winpe help? If so, have you tried the MVP winpe builder 11.1 as well? I think you'll like the resulting winpe much better and should boot fine, even on a system that may have secure boot enabled in the bios or a Linux driver compatibility issue.

The WinPE builder seems to work. I do have to test it in more detail by re-installing other partitions too.

I have tested the regular Rescue Media, not the MVP version, yet. I want to take small steps.
