File size

Thread needs solution

When I do a full backup of my PC, the screen says that the full size of my PC is 87.6 GB.  However, after the backup is complete, I go to File Manager and the backup file is only 19.4 GB.  Does Acronis compress the file size somehow when preparing the backup??

Laura, welcome to these User Forums.

There is an element of compression used when Acronis does a full backup of your PC, this is normally around 20% saving in file sizes.

The other factors that are involved are that Acronis would normally exclude various Windows system files such as pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and swapfile.sys which can add up to many GB's of data, plus the System Volume Information folders are also excluded by default, these again can be very large and are were Windows stores snapshot and restore point data.

Finally, Acronis will also exclude a variety of temporary files based on the file masks shown on the Exclusions page for your backup task configuration, i.e. files with .tmp extensions, or with a tilde ~ character in the file extension etc.
