Robert, it should be OK to run CHKDSK on your backup storage drive but I would recommend running a Validation of your backups before and after doing so.  Validation will compare the checksum embedded in the Acronis .tib image file with the value computed for the file to confirm that the file remains unchanged / not corrupted in any way.

Ideally, you should have backups stored on different drives / locations and not in just one location or on only one drive, so that you do not have a single point of failure in your backup strategy.
