Uninstall original older version to trial new version, then reinstall original version

Thread needs solution

Hi folks,

If I uninstall an original older version (TI 11) to trial a later version (2017)  and if for what ever reason I need to reinstall the original version, will the reinstalled older version still recognize the older original backups I have stored on my external HDD?

I imagine that it will, but would like some confirmation from experienced users.

Ant, when you say you have an older version (ATI 11) you were not joking!  ATI 11 dates back to around 2008 (prior to the release of ATI 2009) and according to the ATI 11 User Guide:

1.3.2 Supported operating systems
• Windows® 2000 Professional SP 4
• Windows XP SP 2
• Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
• Windows Vista (all editions)

All of the above OS versions are no longer supported by Microsoft, assuming that you may still be using one of these?

The normal question we get asked is if the later version will recognise the backups created by the older one.  Your question should be self-answering in that any backups created by TI 11 should remain recognisable / readable by the same product if reinstalled.

See KB 1689: Backup archive compatibility across different product versions which deals with the wider question here.  In essence Acronis will not guarantee compatibility by 2017 or 2018 versions with your 11.0 backup images but in reality, they may well be fully accessible, just have not be tested by Acronis.

Prior to uninstalling the older TI 11, may I suggest being sure to create a bootable rescue media to keep as long as you have the backups created with TI 11.

 

And make a full (Entire PC / disks & partitions) backup of how the computer is now, so that you have the option of restoring back to the same state.

Hi Steve, yes, I'm fully aware how old ATI 11 is...I'm using Windows 7 Home, and ATI 11 has been working successfully with that current laptop for several years, however, I will be migrating to a new laptop with Windows 10.

While in the process of updating hardware and software, I'm attempting to update my knowledge and understanding.

Hi Bruno, yep, that was the first thing I did when originally purchased ATI 11, and will do the same when I purchase a newer version, probably TI 2017, (I'll wait until the bugs are ironed out in TI 2018)

Yes, Steve, I have a disc image of my W7 C:/ partition, (as well as various data backups) which I used about 18 months ago when replacing a faulty HDD.

My intention is to try TI 2017 on this W7 laptop and get all my data freshly backed up with it, so I can then transfer TI 2017 across to the new W10 laptop, and then transfer what I need to the new machine, so that all will then be compatible with the new machine...at which time I will also make a rescue disc and image of my new laptops C: partition as well.

One thing I am disappointed about, which started with ATI 2015, is the removal of "email backup". I used this feature regularly in my current older version!

I'm currently reading the ATI 2017 User Guide and some info in the Acronis KB, but it looks as though to back up your emails in these newer versions of TI, you need to do a full system backup...is that correct?

 

Ant, I never used email backup in the older versions of ATI as they were focused on clients that I didn't use such as MS Outlook, but providing you know where your email is stored (profiles, settings and data store) then you can just do a Files & Folders backup of this data.  The only caveat is to make sure that your email client is not active, especially for such as MS Outlook as it stores changes in memory and doesn't write to disk unless closed or forced to do so.  ATI only backs up data from disk, so wouldn't be fully up to date in this case.

With ATI 2018 there is a global option to send emails about backups. Unlike the option when creating individual backups it does not require any configuration due to the way the message is generated; generated by the Acronis server rather than the PC in question. It can be for all backup tasks or for those instances when a backup fails. I have a separate user account for beta testing and for that I get notifications about all backups, but on my everyday account I only get emails about failed backups.
