Cloning Windows 7 Reassigns OS Drive Letter

Thread needs solution

I need to explain. I apologise for the long text, but otherwise it can be confusing.

Se here is what I've done

I installed windows 7 from Lenovo Disk. THis creates 3 partitions. I deteled the recovery partition. I am left with a System_DRV partition (No 1) and a WIndows 7 partition (No 2).

I made an Acronis image of the Windows Partition (No 2).

I created a new partition (No 3) same size as the Windows 7 partitition and restored the Acronis image there.

Using EasyBCD I created an MBR record on the third parition. In Windows I gave the third partition the letter Z. Using EasyBCD I Created a boot menu where I can load either WIndows on C: or WIndows on Z:

When I boot into WIndows on Z: It actualy reassigns the partition letter to D:. And C: Remains Partition No 2. This casues the two OS to share some configuration data, with undesired effects.

So, I need to Boot into Patition No 3 as C: and have Partition No. 2 have a different letter.

Breaking my head,

The C: assignment is saved in the Registry. It needs to be set to point to partition 3. You can do this when booted to partition 2. DD 11 can also change the drive letter assignments.

Instructions here can be used generally for loading the hive. You would then need to change the C: assignment to be whatever the wrong letter is. For example: Delete the \DosDevices\C: entry and then rename the \DosDevices\D: to \DosDevices\C:

That was a quick reply!!

I read those posts, and they seem to apply to Win XP, but I found the equivalent entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. I'll try that..... Thanks.

Also, I have DD 11 and it changes the drive letter for the currently running instance of the OS, so I don't see how it may be relevant for my solution.

With DD, you have to change the Disk Layout (link is in the top-right corner of the DD screen) and select the appropriate Windows partition. DD will then show the assignments as they are in that OS. You can use the DD CD if you can't do it from Windows.

The basic procedure is the same for XP, Vista, and Windows 7.
