Cloning

Thread needs solution

I just completed a SSD clone / swap.  I must say that I was scared to do it.  I read my butt off, watched videos, etc.  There were some REAL GOOD instructions here - I followed a nice Write-up from Enchantech that was posted in '15.  He said it was 'Dead Simple' - and it was.  Moved from a 250 SSD to a 500 and things seem to be working.

My question is.... I watched a very good video on SSD life expectancy.  The guy knew his stuff for sure.  He recommended keeping a 10% 'buffer' on the drive to help reduce P/E cycles that cause stress.  Made sense to me.  Is there an acronis tool that I can use to Un-Allocate (i guess?) a portion of my new drive.  Would anyone here say that's worth doing?

Thanks all - this is a good forum - some people here are very generous with their time & talent.  I sure do appriciate it!!

Mike, good to hear that your clone to a larger SSD was successful.

With regard to maintaining your SSD in best condition / performance, then the 10% free space rule is good to try to observe but this isn't something that ATI can help directly with.

Please see webpage: 10 Free Tools To Keep Your SSD in Good Shape in Windows which is a couple of years old now but which has some good information and pointers to other information.

You should also be looking at your SSD makers support site and any utilities that they provide, such as Samsung Magician.

See the list of common support sites in the Troubleshooting section of this KB document.

Good info as always, Steve.

I have the Acronis Disk Manager Stuff.  I thought that would let me reserve some space for the P/E crunch.

I will read and follow your instructions. - you are THE MAN

Thanks

Mike,

I wouldn't bother with the 10% drive space allocation as modern SSD's makers build in a 10% over provisioning of drive space to address performance concerns.

Glad you found the Clone procedure "Simple"
