ATI 2018 cloud backup repeatedly Corrupts quickbooks QBW file!

Thread needs solution

We use ati2018 to backup our quickbooks folder.  To test the backup, I restored the .QBW file by downloading from either the cloud backup portal or from restoring via the ati2018 application.   I then open the qbw file in quickbooks.  Initially the backup, restore, and open in quickbooks works perfectly!   But after a few weeks of nightly cloud scheduled backups, eventually restoring the qbw file and opening it in quickbooks generates errors in quickbooks and the file will not open.  Additionally once the file is corrupt in cloud backups, even after running the same back job many times, restoring the file still yields a corrupted qbw file.  Once it is corrupt, it remains corrupt.  If I make a new backup job, the qbw file again restores perfectly.   If I run the old and new backup job side-by-side nightly, the old job yields corrupted qbw restore files, the new one yields perfect qbw restore files.  This will continue for a few weeks, but then the new job becomes corrupted and both are corrupted and never self-heal.  I can again make a new job, and it will yield good qbw restores for a few weeks before it fails again.  It is amazing to me that the good and bad job can run side-by-side and yield different results.

I know the file is corrupt because the quickbook error I receive when opening the file is different every time.  I have seen a handful of different error codes, and sometimes it is just really slow and crashes trying to open it.

I suspect the bit level analysis done by ati is failing to recognize a change to the file and so is not properly backing up the file.

Yes, the quick book file is closed during backup.   Also, the local usb ati2018 backup of the qbw file has worked perfectly for months with never a single issue.  Only the cloud version gets corrupted and fails to repair.  Other file types saved to the cloud seem to restore just fine.   All of these jobs are set to backup daily.

Do you backup quickbooks with ati2018 cloud?

Can you please try a test restore of a job that is at least a month old and tell me if your .qbw file is corrupt as well?

I am more interested, than anything else, in seeing if anyone else is having this issue?

Thanks!

Joe

Joe, sorry but I have never used QuickBooks nor own the application to be able to test this issue.  I would recommend opening a Support Case with Acronis if you believe that this issue only impacts on backups made to the Acronis Cloud and all is OK when backing up locally to a USB drive.

From my reading about QuickBooks, the recommended approach is to use the built-in backup tool in QB itself to create a backup .QBB file, then to just backup that .QBB file instead of trying to backup you .QBW file(s).  See the following webpage on this subject.

As an extension of Steve's suggestion, for the drive on which the QuickBooks data is stored, create an new backup task and exclude the directory or file type (not sure how to do this as it have been ages since I departed from standard exclusions) to avoid possibility of corruption when doing a recovery. The you would recover using Quickbooks recovery procedure.

Agree with original post.  Acronis does not work properly on Quickbooks files.

I use Quickbooks 2017 on two different computers on two different acronis cloud accounts.  Files backup up (with quickbooks closed OR open) can not be successfully opened in Quickbooks after being restored from the cloud.

This problem does not exist on a back and restore of a Quickbooks Backup file.  A backup file is correctly backed up and restored by acronis true image 2017.  Unfortunately the backup files are usually a day or two old so the data is not current.

I had contacted Acronis Support on this and their response was that "acronis does not backup files while they are in use".  However these files are not in use.  The backup starts at 8pm and quickbooks is shutdown at 5pm.

The ironic part is that backup of quickbooks files is the only reason I use acronis.

Sarmad, welcome to these User Forums.

You said: " The backup starts at 8pm and quickbooks is shutdown at 5pm. "  and " This problem does not exist on a back and restore of a Quickbooks Backup file.  A backup file is correctly backed up and restored by acronis true image 2017. "

Given the above, why not schedule your Quickbooks Backup to be created after 5pm and before Acronis runs at 8pm, ensuring that you have a current .QBB file to be captured to the Cloud and which you know can be recovered without problem.

The backup restore method works except that the file has to be renamed and then restored via Quickbooks to replace the original file.  Also Quickbooks limits the total number of backups, and before deleting an old backup it asks the user if they want to delete it.  Some users instinctively want to say no to delete.

I know that working around the problem is possible with secondary backups etc.  but I really would like acronis to fix the actual problem.  Since I do not know how many other types of files are being backed up and are not recoverable.

Sarmad, you would need to raise a Support Case directly with Acronis for this issue as this is just a User Forum and we are not working for Acronis.

Support for ATI 2017 ended in October 2017 so there will be no further fixes for new problems affecting that product version, and to be honest, I doubt that this specific issue has changed with the ATI 2018 product, so that is potentially where a fix would be produced for, if Acronis accepted that there was a problem in their code to be fixed.
