Cannot find version 1 / the specified file does not exist error
I am on build 6571 for Acronis 2016, but I keep getting this error. I also got it when I had the previous release of Acronis. I have tried to create a new backup profile and name, but that's not helping, either. How can I get rid of this error permanently? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for your quick reply. It looks like something gets corrupted. The first "Error_Code" seems to be garbage and I don't see a specific filename that it's looking for in the NAS drive. Later, it reports an error on the file cdp.metadata. The folder exists, but this specific file doesn't appear within this folder specified below. Any suggestions?

Renee, the error codes shown in the log files are always cryptic and we have no method of interpretting their meaning in these user forums, that is something for the Acronis developers.
With regards to the error for file cdp.metadata, this is normally only associated with the use of Non Stop Backup.
If you upgraded to ATIH 2016 from an earlier version, then I would suggest that doing a clean install of the software might be beneficial for this problem, the Acronis Cleanup Tool from the link in my signature can be used after performing a normal uninstall via the Control Panel, or via a utility such as Revo, and this will completely clean up any further traces of the application ready for reinstalling after a restart. This will give a clean start for creating a new backup task to your NAS drive and will fully elimate any cause from the current Acronis Database or task configuration settings, history etc.

With network drives, you might also have a Window credentials issue. With Windows, a specific user in a specific session can only use one set of credentials to access a specific remote computer. So, as the active user, if you access your NAS drive with a public user credential first, for example, and if then Acronis is trying to use another set of credentials to access the NAS for a backup, Acronis won't work properly.
I make sure that the credentials I use to connect Acronis to the bacup destination are the same as the ones with interactive Windows user uses to access the NAS in general.
Some users create a separate Windows user just for Acronis backup to achieve the same alignment, and, as a bonus, to better protect the backup destination shares (mounted disks can be affected by malware)
Given the name of the share you use "Public disk", this is a possible situation for you.

My error has returned. It worked for a short time after I did the steps above. But, the error is now back again. I'm so frustrated.... :( What else can I try? I'm hestitant to upgrade to a later version as I don't want to pay for an upgrade if it has the same results.

Renee, it looks like you have validation turned on in the task - is that correct? I believe others have reported similar behavior when validation is run with the backup task. Try turning validation off in the task as the backup looks to be completing. Then run a manual validation after that and see if that is successful.
For what it's worth, I never validate from the app. I validate by double clicking the .tib file and making sure Windows file explorer can open it, or I right click and "mount" it as a volume and make sure I can navigate it. If I can do that, I know the backup is good.

This same error is consistently back for me again. I know that the version that I am using is no longer supported, but the issues that I've had with this error, I have not desire to upgrade. I have consistently battled this same error/issue for 2 years. :(
I still have validation turned off. I know the solution would be for me to clone this current backup and rename it. But, this is not a permanent solution for me. I need a solution once and for all. Has anyone figured out how to finally resolve this issue?

Renee, given the time lapse since your last post (approaching 2 years) - are you still seeing the exact same error message, and if so, at what point?
Most of the 'Cannot find version X' error messages are generated because of ATI files being deleted manually via Explorer instead of being managed by the ATI automatic cleanup rules. If files are deleted outside of ATI then the Acronis Database still holds references to those files which causes this error message. Doing a Validation for the backup task should help reconcile the database information with the actual status of backup files, but will still generate an error popup for each / any missing file where the Ignore option needs to be selected.

It is very strange because I have never removed any files manually from the backup drive. It's a NAS drive that I have set up with 2 drives in parallel. It works for awhile, but then it will suddenly start throwing this error when the backups first start. So, they never start again until I go through a manual effort of cloning the backup to a new name and start it all over from scratch. I currently have the validation turned off because someone in this thread suggested that it could be part of my issue. I wonder if it is working properly until it is time to cleanup the older files. I use Differential backup; set for creating full backup after 3 chains; and store no more than 2 recent version chains. Thank you in advance for any guidance!!

Renee, sorry but I do not have an answer as to why this problem should keep coming back for you if you are not manually removing files from your NAS and not including validation in the backup task.
Unfortunately ATI 2016 is no longer supported by Acronis for issues, so all that can be offered to you would be to install the final build version of 2016 or else to upgrade to the 2018 version of the product, or a combination of repairing or reinstalling the software etc. I doubt that any of these options are likely to be acceptable to you and I assume you already have the latest build.
Personally, my own backups to my Synology NAS have been working fine with both ATI 2017 & 2018 versions for several years now with no similar issues shown. I have a mix of both these versions in current use but have never included validation for my backup tasks.

Thank you I have been on the latest build since it came out - 6595. I appreciate the fact that 2016 is no longer supported. But, I had this problem throughout my experience with 2016 and if I remember correctly, I also had issues with my previous version. With that said, I am very reluctant to try to spend money to upgrade my 4 computers to a newer version. It seems like many people complained about this issue and I'm not sure if there ever was a solution. I'm definitely not a satisfied user of this product. I'll have to compare to see what other options are out there with hopefully better results.

MUST ADMIT -- I have HAD the same problem for the last year with the same ver ATI2016, but kept delaying my complaints.
1)This morning I did a backup, no scheduling .. single ver, bkup worked fine with no complaints whatsoever .. then
2 )I clicked verify and I got the message cannot find version 1. I then
3) tried to recover disks, and errors returned that bkup files removed long ago cannot be found. Then
4) from win explorer tried validate .. but nothing happened .. no error or other feedback. Then
5) tried to mount, was able to mount and navigate to files .. no problem
BUT THE QUESTION REMAINS .. HOW DO I RESOTORE A WHOLE DISK?
NOTE:
W10 on Surface Pro 2017, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Backup option: no schedule, single ver
HOW DO I RESORE FROM AN EXISTING FILE .. AND WHAT'S THE WORKAROUND?
Pls don't give a link to another article, but a 1.2.3 step-by-step list to resolve the problem, or to do the restore should I need it.

Michael, welcome to these User Forums.
What particular problem are you introducing here? This forum topic was dealing with an error being reported during validation (after a successful backup operation). You seem to be bringing several different possible issues, one with validation, and others regarding recovery?
Do you or have you manually deleted backup .tib files from your backup location using Explorer or other such tools? If you have, then the 'Cannot find version X' message can be given genuinely because doing any manual deletions of files does not update the Acronis Database where ATI stores information about the files it has created, and which is where this type of message can occur from.
If you are attempting or simulating recovery of backup files from within Windows, then the same issue applies. The Windows ATI application will refer to the Acronis Database to build a list of files that were created for the backup task - if any have been deleted outside of ATI then errors will be given for each missing file.
There are several possible ways of circumventing this issue.
- Recommended: use the Automatic Cleanup rules provided with ATI to manage how many backup files are stored and when unwanted files are deleted. This is integrated into the application and will correctly manage the Acronis Database information.
- Attempt to Validate each Backup task shown in the ATI GUI, and when a missing file error is shown, try to take the Ignore option, if given, which should then try to reconcile the information in the Database with the correct file status, i.e. file deleted.
- Take the option to Delete the Backup task from the GUI but do this without deleting the entire task and associated files, so that only the task definition is removed, this will also remove all references to the task from the Database.
One the task is removed, then you can use the option to 'Add existing backup' to add back the latest backup file from your backup location. This will create a new task with the same name as the file, that you would then need to reconfigure and rename to remove the extra _full_bx_sx_vx part (or _diff or _inc). - Create and boot from the Acronis Rescue Media to perform any recovery operation - this is a standalone application environment which does not use the Acronis Database and therefore only requires that it can find a valid and complete backup version chain to use for the recovery action. A complete version chain = 1 x Full plus all associated Differential or Incremental backup files sharing the same _Bx_ sequence number in the file name, i.e. MyBackup_full_b1_s1_v1 plus MyBackup_diff_b1_s2_v1 etc.
Note: If you only create Full backups, then just the full .tib file(s).
Any disk level recovery is recommended to always be performed by using the Acronis Rescue Media to boot the computer. The BIOS boot mode for the media should match that used by the Windows OS as shown by running the msinfo32 command.
If you attempt a disk recovery from within Windows, then ATI will modify the Windows Boot Configuration Data store to create and launch a temporary Linux OS environment from which the ATI application will work. This can (and has) caused some systems to become unbootable if anything goes wrong, and with UEFI systems may require that Secure Boot be disabled. Using the Acronis Rescue media to boot avoids any such Windows BCD changes and is much safer.
