Boot Win 7 From External HD

Thread needs solution

I have 64-bit Win 7 on a Dell Studio XPS 9000. I used the ATHI2010 recovery environment for a system disk backup, stored on an external HD. I did a test recovery, using the rescue media, to another external HD. This also was successful. As a further check, I tried booting the computer from the external HD containing the recovered system disk. This didn't work. Windows started to load then stopped. Is there a reason why Win 7 can't be started from an external HD? Thanks.

Is the external drive USB? Windows is designed to not boot properly from USB drives.

Thanks MudCrab. My external is USB, so you have answered my question. I wondered why the User's Guide encouraged doing a test recovery to a spare external HD but never suggested trying to boot from it. I'll try this with an external eSATA drive. Regards, -TT
